If there was ever a fish that proved just how far selective breeding has come, it would have to be the guppy. With hundreds of incredible strains now available, breeders continue pushing the limits of colour and patterning every year. The Male Blue Cobra Guppy has remained one of the hobby's favourites for decades, thanks to its incredible snakeskin patterning, metallic blue body, and constantly flowing finnage that catches the light from every angle.

The Blue Cobra Guppy is immediately recognisable by its brilliant metallic blue body covered in intricate black reticulated "cobra" markings that extend through the body and often continue into the caudal fin. Depending on the individual, the tail may display shades of turquoise, sapphire, and violet, while the dorsal fin carries matching snakeskin patterning. Under quality aquarium lighting, these fish almost glow as they swim, particularly when displayed against darker substrates or heavily planted aquariums, where the blue colours really stand out.

Male guppies are instantly recognisable by their larger finnage, brighter colours, and slimmer bodies than females. Like all guppies, they are livebearers, with females producing fully formed fry approximately every four to six weeks. Maintaining quality breeding stock is recommended if you wish to preserve the intricate cobra patterning and vibrant blue coloration in future generations.

Tank Recommendations for your Male Blue Cobra Guppy

A trio of guppies can comfortably be maintained in aquariums from 40 litres, although larger planted aquariums provide greater stability and encourage more natural behaviour. Dense planting provides excellent cover for fry, while darker backgrounds beautifully contrast the metallic blue colours. Guppies naturally prefer slightly harder, alkaline water and excellent filtration.

Platies, mollies, swordtails, pseudomugils, ricefish, corydoras, and other peaceful hard-water community fish.

Sometimes Compatible

Peaceful gouramis, rainbowfish, and larger tetras may coexist successfully, provided they are not known for fin nipping.

Rarely Compatible

Tiger barbs, male Bettas, larger cichlids, and predatory fish should generally be avoided due to fin damage or predation.

Feeding your Male Blue Cobra Guppy

Blue Cobra Guppies readily accept quality flakes, nano pellets, and frozen foods. Supplementing with baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms helps maintain their brilliant metallic blue coloration while encouraging excellent finnage development.
