Betta fish have been selectively bred for decades to produce some of the most striking colour combinations in the aquarium hobby, and the Yellow Dragon Plakat is a standout example of this. Combining the bold metallic "dragon scale" genetics with a vibrant yellow base colour and the powerful short-finned plakat form, this variety is both visually stunning and highly active, making it a favourite among collectors.

The Yellow Dragon Plakat displays a rich golden-yellow body that is often overlaid with thick metallic white or silver dragon scaling. This creates a heavy, armour-like appearance across the body, giving the fish a very bold and almost plated look. The fins typically carry strong yellow tones with hints of white or metallic edging, and in some individuals the contrast between the body and fins becomes even more pronounced with age. The plakat body shape gives these fish a more muscular and streamlined profile compared to long-finned bettas, allowing for quicker movement and a more active swimming style throughout the aquarium.

Sexing this variety is straightforward, with males displaying brighter colouration, more defined finnage, and territorial behaviour. During breeding, the male constructs a bubble nest at the surface and courts the female beneath it. After spawning, the male collects the eggs and guards them within the nest until they hatch.

A single male betta should be housed in an aquarium of at least 20–40 litres, though larger aquariums are always recommended for stability and aquascaping. These fish thrive in planted aquariums with gentle filtration and plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, caves, and floating plants. Because of their metallic colouration, they look particularly striking in aquariums with darker substrates or backgrounds. Maintaining warm, stable water between 24–28°C is essential for long-term health.

Betta fish are incredibly easy to feed. They take a wide range of foods and should have a varied diet for optimal health. Because of their mostly top-dwelling nature, they should be given foods that readily float for them to eat easily.
