There probably isn't another freshwater fish that demonstrates just how far selective breeding has come quite like the Siamese Fighting Fish. Over hundreds of years, breeders have developed an incredible range of colours, patterns and finnage, with new varieties continuing to appear every year. One of the most popular modern strains is the Nemo Plakat, combining the incredible colour combinations of the Nemo line with the athletic body shape and shorter fins of the Plakat variety.

The Male Nemo Plakat displays a stunning mix of vibrant orange, crimson red, crisp white and jet black that closely resembles the colouration of a clownfish, which is exactly where the "Nemo" name originated. Every fish develops a completely unique marble pattern, meaning no two individuals are ever the same. Some fish display large blocks of orange and white, whilst others are heavily marbled with black throughout the body and fins. The shorter Plakat finnage gives these Bettas a more streamlined appearance and allows the incredible colouration to become the real focal point. Against darker backgrounds, the orange and red colours really stand out, making this one of the most eye-catching Betta strains available.

Male Bettas are extremely easy to distinguish from females thanks to their brighter colours and larger finnage. Like all Betta splendens, the male constructs a floating bubble nest before embracing the female during spawning. Once the eggs have been fertilised, the male carefully collects them before placing them into the nest, where he alone guards both the eggs and developing fry until they become free-swimming.

Tank Recommendations for your Male Betta Plakat Nemo

A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended for a single male Betta. A well-planted aquarium with floating plants, driftwood and gentle filtration provides the ideal environment. Whilst Bettas are often incorrectly kept in bowls or small containers, they require stable water quality, heating and proper filtration to thrive truly. The Plakat variety is also a considerably stronger swimmer than long-finned Bettas and can comfortably handle slightly more water movement.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Male Plakat Bettas are peaceful towards most community fish but remain highly territorial towards other male Bettas.

Usually Compatible
Corydoras, kuhli loaches, ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, otocinclus and other peaceful community fish that are unlikely to nip fins or compete aggressively.

Sometimes Compatible
Shrimp, peaceful gouramis and slower-moving community fish may coexist successfully, depending on the temperament of the individual Betta.

Rarely Compatible
Other male Bettas, tiger barbs, serpae tetras, fancy guppies, and larger aggressive fish should generally be avoided due to territorial behaviour or fin-nipping.

Feeding your Male Betta Plakat Nemo

Bettas are carnivorous and thrive on a protein-rich diet. The ideal diet would consist of a quality Betta pellet supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp and other meaty foods. Feeding a varied diet will help maintain excellent body condition whilst bringing out the rich oranges, reds and crisp white patterning that make the Nemo strain so popular.
