Male Betta Plakat Mustard Gas
There isn’t a fish more globally recognised than the classic fighter fish. Bettas have been part of the aquarium industry since the late 1800s, which highlights just how incredibly popular they are. Among the hundreds of colour and genetic variations now available in the hobby, the Mustard Gas Plakat Betta stands out as one of the most iconic and bold options. Their explosive colour combination, paired with the sleek and muscular build of the plakat strain, makes them an absolute powerhouse in any nano aquarium.
This betta strain earns the name plakat from traditional Thai short-finned fighting fish, which were bred for strength and agility. Unlike the dramatic trailing fins of crowntail bettas, plakat bettas have shorter, broader fins and a more compact appearance, but they make up for this with sheer intensity. The Mustard Gas variant features a deep, dark body colour—often dark blue, green, or near-black—contrasted by bright mustard-yellow to orange fins. This vivid contrast is striking and eye-catching, and under strong lighting, iridescent hints of turquoise or steel blue may appear along the flanks and fin edges. The shorter fins make this variety ideal for aquarists who want the same fiery aesthetics with a sleeker profile and faster movement. Their distinctive two-toned design is what gives this fish its namesake, resembling a colourful chemical explosion in motion.
Like all betta fish, Mustard Gas Bettas thrive in well-maintained aquariums with proper filtration and stable water parameters. They are best kept as solitary fish in smaller setups, or with carefully selected tank mates in larger community aquariums. Breeding these bettas can be a rewarding project for experienced hobbyists, though maintaining strong genetics and vibrant colouration requires selective breeding.
Tank Recommendations for your Male Betta Plakat Mustard Gas
The ideal tank size for a single Mustard Gas Betta is at least 40 litres. A well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places, such as caves and driftwood, will help provide a sense of security. Water temperature should be maintained between 24–28°C, with a pH range of 6.5–7.5. There is a common misconception that betta fish can be kept in small bowls or cups; however, these fish require clean, warm, and well-maintained water. While they can tolerate minor fluctuations, proper filtration and stable conditions are essential for long-term health.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Mustard Gas Bettas are aggressive toward other male bettas and fish with long, flowing fins. As such, they are best kept with peaceful, non-aggressive species.
Usually Compatible
Small, peaceful species such as neon tetras, cherry barbs, corydoras, and guppies.
Sometimes Compatible
Fast-moving or semi-aggressive species such as zebra danios, harlequin rasboras, and small rasboras. These should be monitored closely, as they may occasionally nip at betta fins.
Rarely Compatible
Larger or aggressive species, such as cichlids, angelfish, and larger tetras, may attack or intimidate the betta.
Feeding your Male Betta Plakat Mustard Gas
In the wild, bettas feed on small insects and crustaceans. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen betta fish foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. It is best to offer small meals throughout the day, as bettas have relatively small stomachs. They are also known for their unique feeding behaviour, often coming to the surface to gulp food, which is both entertaining and engaging to watch. Many bettas can even be trained to hand-feed or take food directly from tweezers.
