Male Betta Plakat Black Gold Star Tail

Betta fish continue to dominate the aquarium hobby when it comes to selectively bred colour strains, and few modern varieties are as striking as the Male Plakat Black Gold Star Tail. This variety combines the bold short-finned plakat body style with an intense black and metallic gold contrast that immediately makes it stand out in display aquariums. For hobbyists who enjoy rare and dramatic betta strains, this is one of those fish that instantly becomes the focal point of the tank.

The Black Gold Star Tail plakat displays a rich jet-black base colour that runs from the head through the body, often deepening into a velvety matte finish under darker aquarium lighting. This dark body is contrasted by brilliant gold metallic scaling that can appear across the head, shoulders, and portions of the fins. The "star tail" effect is most noticeable in the caudal fin, where the rays extend slightly beyond the membrane, giving the tail a spiked, star-like appearance while still maintaining the compact power of the plakat form. Because of the shorter fins, these fish tend to be more active and agile than long-finned halfmoon strains, moving with quick, deliberate bursts around the aquarium.

Sexing bettas of this strain is usually straightforward, with males displaying stronger colour intensity, more defined finnage, and highly territorial behaviour. When breeding, the male constructs a bubble nest at the surface and courts the female underneath it. Once spawning is complete, the male gathers the eggs and carefully places them into the bubble nest, where he guards them until hatching.

Tank Recommendations for your Male Betta Plakat Black Gold Star Tail

A single male betta is best kept in an aquarium of 20–40 litres or larger, with larger aquariums providing more stable water conditions and room for aquascaping. Planted aquariums work particularly well for plakat bettas, as the contrast of green plants against the black and gold body colour makes them stand out beautifully. Driftwood, caves, and floating plants provide shelter, while gentle filtration ensures the fish does not need to fight strong currents. Warm, stable water between 24–28°C is ideal for maintaining strong health and colouration.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Plakat bettas are territorial but can still be kept with carefully chosen peaceful species.

Feeding your Male Betta Plakat Black Gold Star Tail

Betta fish are incredibly easy to feed. They take a wide range of foods and should have a varied diet for optimal health. Giving them a range of flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods will not only help them thrive but also show off amazing colours. Because of their mostly top-dwelling nature, they should be given foods that readily float for them to eat easily.
