Leopolds (Teardrop) Angel 4.5cm
Leopold's Angelfish is one of the less commonly seen species of angelfish and is highly sought after by enthusiasts looking for a more natural and slightly different alternative to the standard scalare varieties. Known for its more streamlined body shape and distinctive teardrop markings, this species offers a subtle but refined take on the classic angelfish look.
Unlike standard angelfish, Leopold's angelfish have a slightly more elongated and less tall body profile, giving them a sleeker and more wild-type appearance. Their base colour is typically silver with strong vertical black barring and a distinctive teardrop-shaped marking beneath the dorsal area, which gives the species its name. The fins are long and elegant but slightly more restrained compared to selectively bred strains, resulting in a more natural swimming motion. In planted or blackwater-style aquariums, these fish display their best colours and behaviour.
Sexing is difficult, as males and females appear very similar. Like other angelfish, they form pairs and spawn on vertical surfaces, with both parents often guarding the eggs and fry.
Tank Recommendations for your Leopold's Teardrop Angelfish
Angelfish require aquariums with both height and length, with a minimum size of 150 litres recommended. Planted aquariums with vertical structures such as driftwood and tall plants work best. A darker background helps highlight the natural patterning of this species.
