Leopard Frog Pleco (L134)

Plecos have become one of the most collected groups of freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby, with many enthusiasts dedicating entire aquariums to different L-number species. The Leopard Frog Pleco (L134) has remained one of the most desirable for years thanks to its manageable adult size, bold patterning and relatively peaceful temperament. Unlike many larger plecos, this species is well suited to community aquariums while still offering the striking appearance collectors look for.

The Leopard Frog Pleco displays a beautiful combination of creamy yellow and jet-black banding across the body that gradually develops into an intricate maze-like pattern as the fish matures. Juveniles often show bold vertical bands, while adults begin to develop broken stripes and irregular markings that closely resemble the patterning seen on a leopard frog, giving this species its common name. The dorsal and caudal fins are equally well patterned, creating a fish that looks spectacular from every angle. Against driftwood and darker substrates, the yellow colouration really shines through and makes this pleco an easy centrepiece despite spending much of its time near the bottom of the aquarium.

Sexing Leopard Frog Plecos becomes easier as they mature. Males generally develop a broader head along with heavier odontode growth across the cheeks and pectoral fins, while females remain slightly rounder through the abdomen. Like many members of the Loricariidae family, they are cave spawners, with the male selecting a suitable cave before guarding the eggs until they hatch.

Tank Recommendations for your Leopard Frog Pleco

Leopard Frog Plecos grow to around 12 cm, making them a fantastic option for medium to large aquariums. A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended.

These fish appreciate mature aquariums with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and plenty of driftwood. Rock caves and timber provide important hiding places throughout the day, while open areas allow them to forage comfortably during the evening. Stable water quality is one of the biggest factors in keeping this species healthy long term.

Leopard Frog Plecos are peaceful bottom dwellers and make excellent additions to South American community aquariums.

Usually Compatible
Angelfish, discus, corydoras, tetras, rainbowfish, Geophagus, severums, and other peaceful community fish that occupy the upper water column.

Sometimes Compatible
Other peaceful plecos and dwarf cichlids may coexist successfully, provided there are plenty of caves and hiding places available for each fish.

Rarely Compatible
Large aggressive cichlids, territorial plecos, and predatory catfish should generally be avoided, as they may compete for shelter or continually harass the L134.

Feeding your Leopard Frog Pleco

Unlike many common plecos, Leopard Frog Plecos require a diet much higher in protein. The ideal diet would consist of a quality sinking carnivore pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and occasional live foods. Whilst they will graze on biofilm and algae throughout the aquarium, these foods should only be considered a supplement rather than their primary diet.
