Unlike many other cichlids, they are relatively peaceful, making them a great addition to a well-planned community tank.

These fish display an elongated body with striking horizontal black striping that runs from head to tail, set against a base colour that ranges from golden yellow to deep orange. Males typically have longer fins with iridescent blues and greens, while females develop a bold red or pink belly when ready to spawn. They prefer soft to moderately hard water with a temperature range of 24-28°C and a pH between 6.0-7.5. Since they occupy the lower and mid-sections of the tank, a sandy or fine gravel substrate is preferred.
