Kribensis Striped Kienke
Kribensis have long been considered one of the best beginner cichlids, combining beautiful colours, peaceful personalities, and fascinating breeding behaviour into one relatively small fish. The Striped Kienke variety offers a more natural appearance than many commercially bred strains, making it particularly appealing to hobbyists wanting to recreate authentic West African biotope aquariums.
The Striped Kienke Kribensis displays an attractive combination of soft gold, olive, and silver tones across the body, with bold vertical barring that becomes increasingly prominent depending on mood and breeding condition. Mature females develop the famous rich purple to crimson belly that Kribensis are renowned for, while males display slightly longer dorsal and caudal fins with subtle blue iridescence along the edges. Against darker substrates and driftwood, the natural colours become surprisingly vibrant without appearing overdone.
One of the biggest attractions of Kribensis is just how easy they are to breed. Sexing is straightforward, with females developing a noticeably rounder body and vibrant purple abdomen, while males grow larger with longer finnage. They are cave spawners that form devoted breeding pairs, with both parents actively protecting the eggs and guiding their fry around the aquarium once they are free-swimming.
Tank Recommendations for your Striped Kienke Kribensis
A minimum aquarium size of 80 litres is suitable for a breeding pair, although larger aquariums are recommended when housing them within community setups. Provide numerous caves, driftwood, and planted areas to establish natural territories. Sand substrates are preferred, allowing these fish to display their natural digging behaviour around spawning sites.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Kribensis are peaceful for most of the year, but become surprisingly protective while raising fry.
Usually Compatible
Congo tetras, rainbowfish, corydoras, bristlenose catfish, larger rasboras, and most peaceful community fish that occupy different areas of the aquarium.
Sometimes Compatible
Angelfish, gouramis, and other peaceful dwarf cichlids may coexist successfully in larger aquariums where territories are well defined.
Rarely Compatible
Large aggressive cichlids or highly territorial fish should be avoided, particularly during breeding, when Kribensis become very defensive of their cave.
Feeding your Striped Kienke Kribensis
Kribensis are extremely easy to feed and readily accept pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. A quality slow-sinking cichlid pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms or brine shrimp, will maintain excellent health while encouraging breeding behaviour.
