Whilst most aquarists immediately think of the colourful Siamese Fighting Fish when Bettas are mentioned, there is actually an incredible diversity of wild Betta species spread throughout Southeast Asia. Many of these species display completely different behaviours to the domestic Betta splendens, with one of the most fascinating examples being the Krabi Mouthbrooding Betta. Rather than building a bubble nest, these fish have evolved an entirely different breeding strategy, making them a favourite amongst dedicated Betta enthusiasts.

The Krabi Mouthbrooding Betta displays a subtle but incredibly attractive combination of earthy browns, olive greens and metallic blue highlights that become more intense as the fish matures. Mature males often develop beautiful turquoise iridescence across the cheeks and gill plates, whilst the fins take on soft blue edging that becomes particularly vibrant during breeding displays. Although they don't possess the extravagant finnage of domestic Bettas, their natural colouration and streamlined body give them a distinctly wild appearance that many enthusiasts actually prefer. Against dark substrates, driftwood and leaf litter, the metallic blues really begin to shine through whilst still maintaining their natural camouflage.

Sexing Krabi Mouthbrooding Bettas is relatively straightforward once mature, with males generally developing brighter colours, a broader head and slightly larger bodies than females. Unlike domestic Bettas that construct bubble nests, Betta simplex are paternal mouthbrooders. Following spawning, the male carefully collects the fertilised eggs into his mouth, where they remain protected for around two weeks before fully developed fry are released. This fascinating breeding behaviour is one of the main reasons this species has become so popular amongst wild Betta keepers.

Tank Recommendations for your Krabi Mouthbrooding Betta

A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended for a compatible pair or small group. A heavily planted aquarium with driftwood, rounded rockwork and plenty of hiding places will help these fish feel secure. Unlike many domestic Bettas, Betta simplex naturally inhabit clear limestone streams, meaning they appreciate stable water conditions with gentle water movement and excellent filtration. Floating plants and subdued lighting will further encourage natural behaviour.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Krabi Mouthbrooding Bettas are considerably more peaceful than domestic fighting fish and can often be maintained successfully in carefully planned community aquariums.

Usually Compatible
Ember tetras, chilli rasboras, pygmy corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus and other peaceful nano fish that enjoy similar water conditions.

Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful gouramis, small rainbowfish and other wild Betta species may coexist successfully in larger aquariums with plenty of visual barriers.

Rarely Compatible
Large cichlids, fin-nipping barbs, highly aggressive community fish and domestic male Bettas should generally be avoided due to stress and territorial behaviour.

Krabi Mouthbrooding Bettas are carnivorous and thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet. The ideal diet would consist of quality Betta pellets supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia and other small live or frozen foods. A varied diet will help maintain excellent condition whilst encouraging successful breeding behaviour.
