Habrosus Corydoras 2.5cm
Habrosus Corydoras
Corydoras have got to be one of the most useful groups of community fish in the aquarium hobby, but not every aquarist has the space for a large school of standard-sized Corys. Corydoras habrosus is one of the true dwarf members of the group, reaching only a few centimetres long whilst retaining all of the constant foraging behaviour and personality that makes Corydoras so popular. This makes them a fantastic option for planted nano aquariums where larger Corydoras may simply take up too much space.
The Habrosus Corydoras displays a soft silver to beige body covered with irregular charcoal markings that provide fantastic camouflage against sand, leaf litter, and natural aquarium décor. A darker broken stripe runs through the middle of the body, whilst scattered spots extend through the back and fins, giving these fish a more heavily patterned appearance than many other dwarf Corydoras. Unlike Corydoras pygmaeus, which regularly schools through the middle of the aquarium, Habrosus Corydoras behave much more like traditional Corys and spend the majority of their time actively searching across the substrate. Watching a large group sift through fine sand is one of the biggest appeals of keeping this tiny species.
Sexing Habrosus Corydoras becomes relatively straightforward once mature, with females developing a noticeably broader and deeper body than males, particularly when viewed from above. Like other Corydoras, they display the classic T-position during spawning before females deposit individual adhesive eggs across plants, glass, and décor. Cooler water changes and a varied diet can often help trigger breeding behaviour.
Tank Recommendations for your Habrosus Corydoras
Habrosus Corydoras should always be maintained in groups of at least 6–8 fish, although groups of 10 or more will produce far more confident and natural behaviour. A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended.
A fine sand substrate is ideal, as these fish spend much of their time digging and sifting for food using their sensitive barbels. Plants, driftwood, and leaf litter provide excellent areas of cover whilst leaving open sections of sand for the school to forage across.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Habrosus Corydoras are incredibly peaceful and are perfect for smaller community aquariums.
Usually Compatible
Ember tetras, chilli rasboras, celestial pearl danios, small pencilfish, Endlers, Pseudomugils, and other peaceful nano fish.
Sometimes Compatible
Dwarf gouramis, Apistogramma, and German blue rams can sometimes work in larger planted aquariums; however, the extremely small size of the Corydoras should always be considered.
Rarely Compatible
Oscars, large angelfish, predatory catfish, and aggressive cichlids should be avoided, as these tiny Corydoras can easily become prey or be intimidated away from food.
Feeding your Habrosus Corydoras
Habrosus Corydoras require appropriately sized sinking foods due to their tiny mouths. The ideal diet would consist of a quality micro-sinking pellet supplemented with baby brine shrimp, daphnia, finely chopped bloodworms, and other small frozen foods. Like all Corydoras, they should be deliberately fed rather than expected to survive on leftover food.
