Golden Neon Rosy Barb 4cm
Golden Neon Rosy Barb
Rosy barbs have remained one of the most popular larger schooling fish in the aquarium hobby thanks to their hardiness, active behaviour, and brilliant colours. The Male Neon Rosy Barb is one of the most vibrant selectively bred variations, displaying an intense fluorescent red body that becomes even brighter during breeding displays or when kept in large schools. Their constant movement and peaceful nature make them an excellent choice for larger community aquariums.
The Male Neon Rosy Barb displays a brilliant crimson-to-fluorescent cherry-red body that almost glows under aquarium lighting. Mature males develop the deepest colours, with the scales reflecting subtle metallic highlights as they swim. The dorsal fin is often darkened with black edging, while the remaining fins carry rich red tones that complement the body beautifully. During the breeding season, males intensify dramatically in colour, making a large school one of the most eye-catching displays possible in a freshwater aquarium.
Sexing rosy barbs is very straightforward, with males developing significantly brighter red coloration and a slimmer body shape than females. Females remain larger, rounder, and display softer golden or bronze tones. They are egg scatterers and will readily breed in well-maintained aquariums, depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
Tank Recommendations for your Golden Neon Rosy Barb
Rosy barbs are active schooling fish that should always be kept in groups of six or more. A minimum aquarium size of 120 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space. A planted aquarium with plenty of open water works exceptionally well. Dark substrates and green plants help maximise their brilliant red coloration, while moderate water movement closely replicates their natural habitat.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Male Neon Rosy Barbs are active but generally peaceful community fish.
Usually Compatible
Rainbowfish, Congo tetras, larger rasboras, corydoras, bristlenose catfish, peaceful gouramis, and most medium-sized community fish that enjoy similar water conditions.
Sometimes Compatible
Angelfish, severums, and other slower-moving fish can work in larger aquariums, although the barbs' energetic nature may occasionally cause minor chasing during feeding.
Rarely Compatible
Long-finned fish such as bettas or fancy guppies are not recommended, as they may occasionally become targets for fin nipping, particularly if the barbs are kept in small groups.
Feeding your Golden Neon Rosy Barb
Male Neon Rosy Barbs are extremely easy to feed and readily accept almost any aquarium food. The ideal diet consists of a quality flake or floating pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, or brine shrimp to maximise colour and maintain excellent condition.
