Gold Severum 3.5cm
The Severum is a popular, large cichlid known for its peaceful nature and beautiful golden-yellow colouration. The Gold Severum is an aquarium-bred strain that develops its colour from a young age, with carotenoid-rich foods helping enhance its appearance. They enjoy a vegetable-based diet and treats such as lettuce leaves. Usually grows to 15–20 cm.
Gold Severum
There aren't many larger South American cichlids that combine impressive size with relatively peaceful behaviour quite like the Severum. Often recommended as an alternative to more aggressive cichlids such as Oscars, Severums have been kept in the aquarium hobby for decades and are now available in several selectively bred colour varieties. The Gold Severum is arguably one of the most recognisable, replacing much of the darker natural pigmentation with brilliant yellow and golden colouration.
The Gold Severum develops a beautiful pale yellow to rich golden body, which becomes considerably more intense as the fish matures. Depending on the individual, subtle orange to red markings develop across the face, shoulders, and fins, whilst the eyes often remain a striking red. Faint vertical bands can still become visible across the body depending on mood, particularly in younger fish; however, these generally become much less noticeable against the golden base colour with age. Their tall, rounded body profile gives them a similar presence to discus but with a considerably more robust appearance. Against dark backgrounds and green plants, the brilliant yellow colour really does stand out.
Sexing Gold Severums becomes easier once mature, with males generally developing stronger facial markings and slightly more elongated dorsal and anal fins, although these differences aren't always reliable. Once a compatible pair forms, they become substrate spawners, cleaning a flat rock or similar surface before depositing and fertilising their eggs. Both parents will actively guard the eggs and fry and can become considerably more territorial during this period.
Tank Recommendations for your Gold Severum
Gold Severums are large-growing cichlids that can reach around 20–25 cm, making a minimum aquarium size of approximately 250 litres recommended for an adult or compatible pair.
A larger aquarium with driftwood, smooth rockwork, and plenty of open swimming space provides an ideal environment. Hardy plants can be used; however, Severums may occasionally nibble softer vegetation. A dark background works particularly well with the Gold variety and creates a fantastic contrast against their yellow body colour.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Gold Severums are relatively peaceful cichlids but should still be maintained with fish capable of handling their eventual size.
Usually Compatible
Geophagus, silver dollars, larger rainbowfish, Congo tetras, bristlenose catfish, Raphael catfish, and other peaceful medium- to large-sized community species.
Sometimes Compatible
Angelfish, Oscars, Blue Acara, and other medium-growing cichlids can work in larger aquariums; however, territorial behaviour should be monitored as the fish mature.
Rarely Compatible
Small tetras, guppies, shrimp, and nano fish may eventually become prey. Highly aggressive species such as Dovii and Jaguar Cichlids should also be avoided, as they can easily overpower a Severum.
Feeding your Gold Severum
Gold Severums are incredibly easy to feed and will readily accept pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. The ideal diet would be a quality cichlid pellet supplemented with frozen bloodworms, prawns, and vegetable matter such as spirulina or blanched greens. A varied diet will help maintain their strong golden colouration and overall body condition.
