Geophagus species are well known for their sand-sifting behaviour and earthy natural beauty, and Geophagus winemilleri is no exception. This species is particularly appealing for aquarists who enjoy South American biotope aquariums, as it combines peaceful behaviour with a strong presence and subtle but attractive colouration.
Geophagus winemilleri displays a base colour of soft silver to beige with subtle iridescent blue and green speckling across the body. A darker mid-body marking is often present, along with faint vertical barring. As they mature, the colours intensify slightly and the fins may develop soft red or orange highlights. Their elongated body and continuous movement as they sift through the substrate give them a very natural and engaging presence in the aquarium.
Sexing can be difficult, though males may develop slightly longer fins and more intense colouration. Like other geophagus species, they are substrate spawners and form pairs, often displaying strong parental care over eggs and fry.
Tank Recommendations for your Geophagus Winemilleri
As a fairly large South American cichlid that can reach up to 15 cm, this species requires an aquarium of at least 200 litres. Geophagus are best kept in groups of three or more, which is why a larger aquarium is always preferred.
A fine sand substrate is essential due to their constant sand-sifting behaviour. Additional décor such as smooth river stones and driftwood also works very well. Because Geophagus winemilleri originates from South America, they prefer softer water with a pH of around 6.0–7.0.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Geophagus winemilleri are relatively peaceful fish and can usually be kept in a community aquarium setup. It is generally best to avoid fish small enough to fit into their mouths, although there are many successful cases of geophagus being kept with smaller tank mates.
Usually Compatible
Angelfish, corydoras, severums, discus, blue acara and a range of small to medium community fish.
Sometimes Compatible
Semi-aggressive South American fish such as convicts, firemouths and similar species.
Rarely Compatible
Large aggressive species such as dovii, which are far too aggressive, and invertebrates like shrimp, which may be viewed as prey.
Feeding your Geophagus Winemilleri
Like many other South American cichlids, Geophagus winemilleri are very easy to feed. Due to their bottom-dwelling nature, care should be taken to ensure food reaches them before tank mates consume it. A quality sinking pellet or slow-sinking flake supplemented with frozen foods is ideal for maintaining strong health.
A fun feeding option is to offer live blackworms, which encourages the fish to naturally sift through the substrate in search of food.
