Geophagus Rio Branco 4cm
Geophagus has got to be one of the most fascinating groups of South American cichlids because their entire lifestyle revolves around constantly sifting through the substrate in search of food. The name Geophagus literally translates to "earth eater", which perfectly describes the way these fish take mouthfuls of sand before filtering out anything edible and releasing the substrate through their mouth and gills. The Rio Branco Geophagus is a beautiful locality fish that combines this fascinating behaviour with the colours and finnage that make Geophagus such impressive display cichlids.

Geophagus Rio Branco
Geophagus has got to be one of the most fascinating groups of South American cichlids because their entire lifestyle revolves around constantly sifting through the substrate in search of food. The name Geophagus literally translates to "earth eater", which perfectly describes the way these fish take mouthfuls of sand before filtering out anything edible and releasing the substrate through their mouth and gills. The Rio Branco Geophagus is a beautiful locality fish that combines this fascinating behaviour with the colours and finnage that make Geophagus such impressive display cichlids.
The Rio Branco Geophagus develops a beautiful silver to olive body that becomes increasingly colourful as the fish matures. Metallic blue, turquoise, and green scales begin to shine through across the flanks, whilst warmer yellow, orange, and red tones can develop through the belly and fins. Depending on the individual, darker lateral markings may become considerably more noticeable during displays or territorial behaviour. Mature males develop extended dorsal and anal fins along with significantly stronger colouration than younger fish. One of the best things about Geophagus, however, is their movement, as a group will spend almost the entire day picking up mouthfuls of sand, filtering through it, and moving onto the next area of the aquarium.
Sexing Rio Branco Geophagus can be difficult whilst young; however, mature males generally grow larger, develop stronger colouration, and display more elongated finnage than females. Breeding behaviour varies somewhat between species and locality, but pairs generally select and clean a spawning location before producing a relatively large number of eggs. Once breeding, these fish display excellent parental behaviour and will actively protect their eggs and fry.
Tank Recommendations for your Geophagus Rio Branco
Geophagus are active, medium- to large-growing cichlids, and a minimum aquarium size of around 300 litres is recommended for a group. Larger aquariums are always preferred when maintaining multiple adults. A fine sand substrate is arguably the most important part of their aquarium because substrate sifting is a fundamental part of their natural behaviour. Avoid sharp gravel, which may damage their mouth or gills. Driftwood, smooth rocks, and plants can be used throughout the aquarium; however, plenty of open sandy floor space should remain available.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Rio Branco Geophagus are relatively peaceful for their eventual size and work particularly well in larger South American community aquariums.
Usually Compatible
Severums, larger peaceful tetras, silver dollars, angelfish, bristlenose catfish, larger Corydoras, and other relatively peaceful South American species.
Sometimes Compatible
Discus, Oscars, and other medium- to large-sized South American cichlids may work depending on aquarium size and individual temperament. Care should be taken to ensure slower species are not outcompeted during feeding.
Rarely Compatible
Highly aggressive cichlids such as Jaguar Cichlids and Dovii should generally be avoided. Very small tetras, shrimp, and nano fish may also eventually be considered food by larger Geophagus.
Feeding your Geophagus Rio Branco
Geophagus are extremely easy to feed but naturally spend much of their day searching through the substrate for small food items. The ideal diet would be a quality slow-sinking pellet supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and other small foods that can be naturally sifted from the sand.
