Killifish have quietly developed one of the most passionate followings in the aquarium hobby, and it's not difficult to understand why. Their incredible colours often rival marine fish, yet many species remain small enough for nano aquariums. The Gardneri Lafia Gold is one of the standout varieties, combining brilliant yellows with striking blue highlights to create a truly spectacular display of fish.

The Gardneri Lafia Gold displays a brilliant golden-yellow body overlaid with shimmering turquoise and electric blue spotting across the body and fins. Mature males develop elongated dorsal, anal, and caudal fins decorated with vivid red edging and intricate blue speckling, creating one of the most colourful freshwater fish available. Females are considerably more subdued, displaying softer golden-brown colours that allow the males to become the undeniable centrepiece of the aquarium.

Sexing these fish is extremely straightforward, with males displaying much brighter colours and longer finnage than females. Gardneri killifish are prolific egg layers, depositing adhesive eggs among spawning mops or fine-leaved plants. The eggs can even be collected and incubated separately, making them one of the more rewarding egg-laying species to breed.

Tank Recommendations for your Gardneri Lafia Gold

A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended for a breeding pair or small group. A densely planted aquarium with floating plants and subdued lighting will encourage natural behaviour and maximise coloration. A secure lid is essential, as killifish are exceptional jumpers.

Usually Compatible

Pygmy corydoras, kuhli loaches, rasboras, ember tetras, and other peaceful nano fish that occupy different areas of the aquarium.

Sometimes Compatible

Peaceful dwarf gouramis and smaller rainbowfish may coexist successfully, provided the aquarium contains plenty of cover.

Rarely Compatible

Large cichlids, aggressive barbs, and tiny shrimp should generally be avoided, as shrimp may eventually become food.

Feeding your Gardneri Lafia Gold

Gardneri killifish are enthusiastic carnivores and thrive on a varied diet. Quality micro pellets combined with frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia and live foods will maximise coloration while encouraging breeding.
