Female Koi Fighter

Betta fish have been selectively bred for generations to produce some of the most striking colours and patterns seen in aquarium fish today. The Female Koi Fighter is one of the more recent and visually impressive varieties, combining the classic personality of Betta splendens with beautiful marbled colouration reminiscent of koi carp.

Female koi fighters typically display a mix of white, red, orange, and black patterning across the body and fins. The marbled nature of their genetics means each fish is completely unique, with no two individuals displaying the exact same pattern. Their fins are shorter and more streamlined than the elaborate fins of many male bettas, giving them a slightly more active and agile appearance in the aquarium.

Sexing bettas is usually straightforward, as females tend to have shorter fins and a slightly rounder body shape compared to males. Female bettas can sometimes be kept together in groups known as sororities, though this should only be attempted in larger aquariums with plenty of hiding places. When breeding, males build bubble nests at the surface and guard the eggs until they hatch.

Tank Recommendations for Your Female Koi Fighter

A single female betta can comfortably live in aquariums from 40 litres and above, though larger tanks will always provide a more stable environment. They appreciate well-planted aquariums with plenty of cover, such as driftwood, plants, and caves. Gentle filtration is recommended, as bettas naturally inhabit slower-moving waters.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Female bettas are generally less aggressive than males, but still have a territorial nature.

Small, peaceful species such as neon tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small gouramis.

Feeding Your Female Koi Fighter

Bettas are carnivorous fish that thrive on a protein-rich diet. High-quality betta pellets make an excellent staple food. Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blackworms are also readily accepted and provide excellent nutrition.
