Delicate Blue Eyes

Among the many stunning dwarf rainbows in Australia, the delicate blue eyes are quite easily near the top of the list for their stunning simplicity. Its small size, flashy demeanor, and simple colour palette make it a great fish for the aquarists looking for something new.

Though they have delicate in their name these dwarf rainbows are relatively hardy fish that can thrive in a range of conditions including brackish. Where the name delicate blue eye most makes sense is with the aesthetic of these fish. They have an olive-green colouration that starts off very light and gradually gets darker near the tail end. for an added contrast they also have a jet black and white rim around the flashy, broad fins. Finally, the most characteristic trait is their powder blue eye that shimmers under the aquarium lighting.

The small size of around 5 cm max makes the delicate blue eye a great addition for nano aquariums and their hardy nature allows them to be an easy choice for aquarists looking to enter the rainbow fish world. These fish display amazingly when kept in schools and are easily bred in the home aquarium given the right conditions. Males tend to have very flashy fins, and colors in contrast to the females which are less vibrant with subdued fin size. In the wild, the delicate blue eye can be found in freshwater and brackish waterways of northern Australia.

Tank Recommendations for your Delicate Blue Eye

Being a very small and easy to care for fish the delicate blue eyes can be kept in nanosystems with the minimum being a 40-liter aquarium. due to the active mid to top water-dwelling behavior this species has, it is recommended to have a tight-fitting lid and longer aquarium.

The hardscape choices are not too important as long as they do not increase the PH of the water since these delicate blue eyes prefer soft water conditions with a preferred PH of around 5.0 - 7.0. They will also love a well-planted aquarium which will not only make this fish contrast really well but also promote more open behavior.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Being a small and peaceful fish, the delicate blue eye is a very easy fish to pair with other tank mates. They can be kept in aquariums with other dwarf rainbow fish or in mixed community aquariums.

Usually Compatible

Pseudomogil species such as forktail rainbows, blue eyes, and nano aquarium fish like neon tetras.

Sometimes Compatible

Medium size growing rainbows such as neon rainbows, Murray river rainbows, and larger community fish like gouramis. Though these fish may be okay temperament wise they would be far too boisterous for the small blue eye.

Rarely Compatible

Large and aggressive species would prey on the delicate blue-eye or fin-nipping species like tiger barbs.

Feeding your Delicate Blue Eyes

The delicate blue eyes are very easy to feed once it is settled into the aquarium. It will readily eat a wide range of foods but would prefer to have high protein-rich options like bloodworms, Mysis shrimp, or live foods such as brine shrimp.

This however can be substituted with good quality flakes or nano floating pellets. Feeding should happen once during the day during lighting hours.
