Corydoras Raimundi

Corydoras raimundi is a lesser-known and absolutely gorgeous species of wild-caught Corydoras, ideal for aquarists looking to add something rare and refined to the bottom level of their aquarium. This species is native to the upper Amazon basin and shares many classic Corydoras traits, including peaceful schooling behavior, sand-sifting habits, and a fascinating appearance.

What sets Corydoras raimundi apart is its subtle, pearlescent silver body covered with faint speckling and blotched patterns that extend along the flanks. A beautiful dark lateral stripe begins just behind the gill plate and tapers toward the tail fin, giving it a sleek and streamlined look. Depending on the angle and lighting, the fish may show hints of gold or green iridescence around the gill area and along the back, adding a touch of wild charm to planted tanks or blackwater setups. Their small size, usually topping out around 5cm, makes them perfect for smaller systems or large schools in bigger aquariums.

Corydoras raimundi are best kept in groups of six or more to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. These bottom-dwellers constantly sift through the substrate for food, which also helps maintain a clean and well-oxygenated tank floor. They are peaceful, hardy, and adapt well to captivity, although they may initially be shy after import due to their wild origin. Breeding Corydoras raimundi in captivity is possible but rarely documented. Like most Corydoras, they are egg scatterers. Females are generally rounder-bodied when mature, and a slight drop in temperature after a high-protein feeding routine can stimulate spawning. Providing soft, tannin-stained water, dim lighting, and dense vegetation can help replicate their natural breeding conditions.

Tank Recommendations for your Corydoras Raimundi

As small, active bottom-dwellers, Corydoras raimundi require a minimum tank size of 70 litres. A fine sand substrate is essential to prevent damage to their sensitive barbels. Include plenty of driftwood, leaf litter, and live plants to replicate their natural Amazonian habitat. Water should be soft, slightly acidic, and very clean, with gentle flow and good oxygenation.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Raimundi corydoras are an incredibly peaceful fish which can be kept with an absolutely massive range of community aquarium. They do not display any aggression even when breeding and make for a perfect additio,n even with sensitive or shy fish. The obvious consideration would be to just avoid keeping anything that might harm this fish.

Usually Compatible

Angelfish, cardinal tetras, rams, discus, and similar peaceful South American species.

Sometimes Compatible

Mystus catfish, convict cichlids, pearsi cichlids, and other peaceful fish for territorial species.

Rarely Compatible

Large and aggressive species such as oscars, which may prey on the Corydoras. This is especially important as Corydoras have spines on their pectoral fins like many catfish; this can result in both the corydoras and the predator fish’s death.

Feeding your Raimundi Corydoras

Just like any other corydora,s these fish are very easy to feed. They will take a wide range of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. Just like any fish though, they should be fed a varied diet with a mix of different foods. The ideal diet would be a good quality micro slow sinking pellet or crushed flake, supplemented with frozen bloodworm,s live micro worms.
