Originating from Lake Malawi in East Africa, this species combines vibrant colours with a confident personality that makes it a great addition to larger cichlid aquariums.

The Yellow Fin Mloto displays a beautiful contrast of colours across its body. The base colour is typically a soft blue-to-grey tone, while the fins display striking yellow highlights that give the fish its name. Mature individuals often develop stronger colour contrast, with the yellow tones becoming more vibrant against the darker body. Like many Malawi cichlids, they have a robust body shape with a slightly elongated profile and pointed fins that enhance their striking appearance.

Sexing these cichlids can usually be done through colour and size differences, with males typically displaying stronger colours and slightly larger body sizes than females. Breeding follows the classic African cichlid pattern, where the female will mouthbrood the fertilised eggs until the fry are developed enough to be released into the aquarium.

Tank Recommendations for Your Yellow Fin Mloto

Due to their territorial nature, African cichlids require aquariums with plenty of space and structure. A tank of at least 200 litres is recommended, with larger aquariums being ideal for mixed Malawi communities.

Rock structures and caves are essential, as they help create territories and hiding spots. A sandy substrate works best, as it mimics the natural habitat of these fish and allows them to display natural digging behaviour.
