This species displays a base colour of olive-green to bronze with darker vertical barring and subtle iridescent speckling. As they mature, their colours deepen and the patterning becomes more pronounced, giving them a very natural and commanding presence. Their body is thick and muscular, and they exhibit strong territorial behaviour, particularly as adults.

Sexing is possible as males mature, with males growing larger and developing more pronounced finnage. They are substrate spawners and form pairs, with both parents actively guarding eggs and fry.

A minimum aquarium size of 400 litres or larger is required. Strong filtration, open swimming space, and durable décor are essential. These fish can rearrange aquascaping due to their size and strength.
