The Wolf Cichlid is widely regarded as one of the most powerful and aggressive freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Native to Central America, this species is a true apex predator and is best suited to experienced aquarists with large, species-focused aquariums.

Wolf cichlids display a robust, muscular body with a base colour of silver to grey overlaid with darker patterning and subtle blue or green iridescence. Males develop more intense colouration and can grow significantly larger than females, often becoming extremely imposing fish. As they mature, their head structure becomes more pronounced, and their overall presence in the aquarium becomes dominant. Their powerful swimming ability and territorial behaviour make them a true centrepiece fish.

Sexing is possible as they mature, with males growing larger and developing stronger colouration. They are substrate spawners and form strong breeding pairs, with both parents aggressively defending eggs and fry.

Tank Recommendations for your Wolf Cichlid

A very large aquarium of 800 litres or more is required, with significantly larger systems strongly preferred. Heavy rockwork, large driftwood and strong filtration are essential. Tanks should be designed with territorial boundaries in mind.

Suitable Tank Buddies

This species is highly aggressive and tank mates must be chosen extremely carefully.

Usually Compatible

Best kept alone or in a dedicated pair setup.

Sometimes Compatible

Very large and robust fish such as oscars, jaguar cichlids or large catfish, though aggression is always a risk.

Rarely Compatible

Most community fish or smaller cichlids, as they are highly likely to be attacked or eaten.

Feeding your Wolf Cichlid

These fish are powerful carnivores and require a high-protein diet. Feeding them is always a joy, as they can hit the surface of the water with incredible force, creating an explosive splash effect. The ideal diet would be large cichlid pellets supplemented with frozen foods such as fish, prawns or worms.
