Tetras are one of the most popular groups of community aquarium fish thanks to their schooling behaviour, manageable size, and wide variety of colours. The Chocolate Tetra is a particularly attractive species that offers something a little different from the brighter neon-style tetras commonly seen in the hobby. Their warm earthy tones and subtle metallic highlights make them an excellent choice for planted aquariums and more natural blackwater-style setups.

Chocolate tetras display a slender, torpedo-shaped body with a soft bronze to cocoa-brown base colour that gives the species its common name. Under aquarium lighting, this warm body tone can develop flashes of copper, amber, and even soft gold across the flanks, especially when kept in darker aquariums with tannins or black substrates. A subtle darker line may run laterally through the body, adding extra depth to their appearance, while the fins remain mostly translucent with slight amber edging. When kept in a school, these fish create a beautiful flowing movement through the mid-water column and look particularly impressive against green plants and driftwood.

Sexing Chocolate Tetras can be slightly difficult, though females are often a little fuller-bodied than males when mature. Like many tetra species, they are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. In softer, acidic water, breeding is possible in the home aquarium, with eggs typically hatching within a few days if the adults are removed after spawning.

Tank Recommendations for your Chocolate Neon Tetra

Chocolate tetras are best kept in groups of 6 or more, with larger schools always bringing out better colour and confidence. A minimum aquarium size of 40–60 litres is recommended, depending on school size.

These fish thrive in planted aquariums with driftwood, darker substrates, and subdued lighting. They also respond very well to tannin-rich blackwater setups, which deepen the warm bronze tones through the body. Softer acidic water and plenty of mid-water swimming space will help them display their best behaviour.

Feeding your Chocolate Neon Tetra

During feeding, these fish are very easy to care for and will readily accept a wide range of aquarium foods. Due to their smaller mouth size, micro flakes, crushed pellets, or fine slow-sinking foods are ideal.
The best diet would be a good quality micro pellet or crushed flake, supplemented with frozen baby brine shrimp, microworms, or finely sized bloodworms to maintain strong health and bring out the warm chocolate tones.
