The Protomelas Chimoto Red is a stunning African cichlid that showcases some of the most vibrant red colouration found in Lake Malawi species. This fish is highly sought after by African cichlid enthusiasts for its bold colours, strong presence and active swimming behaviour.

Males of this species develop a striking deep red to crimson body colour, often combined with subtle blue highlights in the fins depending on maturity and dominance. Females and juveniles are typically more subdued, displaying silver-grey tones with faint patterning. As males mature and establish dominance, their colour intensifies dramatically, making them a true centrepiece fish in African cichlid aquariums.

Sexing is straightforward, with males displaying the intense red colouration while females remain duller in appearance. Like most African cichlids, they are mouthbrooders, with females carrying fertilised eggs and fry in their mouths until they are ready to be released.

Tank Recommendations for your Protomelas Chimoto Red

A minimum aquarium size of 200 litres or larger is recommended. Rockwork, caves and open swimming areas are essential to replicate Lake Malawi environments. Stable water conditions and strong filtration are critical for long-term health.

Suitable Tank Buddies

These fish are semi-aggressive and should be housed with other African cichlids.

Other Malawi cichlids such as haps, peacocks and larger mbuna species with similar temperaments.

Sometimes Compatible

Feeding your Protomelas Chimoto Red

These fish are easy to feed and will accept a wide range of foods. The ideal diet would be a quality cichlid pellet, supplemented with frozen foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms to enhance colouration.
