The Checkered Rainbow from Mary River is a stunning example of Australia's native splendida rainbowfish, a species known for its many dazzling colour variants depending on collection location. A fantastic choice for both rainbowfish collectors and planted tank lovers, this variety is energetic, hardy, and full of character.
As juveniles, these rainbows often appear muted, but with age and good care, they undergo a spectacular transformation. Adult males display a shimmering silver body overlaid with fine black lateral bars, giving them a "checkered" appearance. Their fins are typically adorned with hints of red, orange, or even blue, especially when they're showing off during breeding or dominance displays. Females tend to be less intensely coloured but still carry the signature pattern and vibrant movements that make them enjoyable to watch.
Breeding the Checkered Rainbow in captivity is entirely possible and follows typical rainbowfish behaviour. Males court females with flashing displays and increased colouration, and will often breed on a daily basis once mature. Spawning mops or fine-leaved plants provide an ideal medium for egg laying. Eggs hatch in about a week, and fry can be raised with small live or powdered foods.
Tank Recommendations for your Checkered Rainbow - Mary Rainbow
These rainbowfish are active, mid-water swimmers and need plenty of space to dart and display in schools. A tank of at least 180 litres is recommended, with more space always being appreciated. A planted tank is ideal, not only for aesthetics but also to provide a sense of security and reduce stress. They're peaceful and adaptable, thriving in tropical freshwater setups with gentle filtration, steady temperatures, and a tight-fitting lid.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Checkered Rainbows are peaceful but fast, meaning they do best with similarly sized and active fish. Avoid slow feeders or very small species that could be intimidated.
Usually Compatible
Other rainbowfish species, larger tetras, danios, barbs, and peaceful catfish.
Sometimes Compatible
Corydoras, Apistogramma, angelfish, and other smaller or potentially slow-moving species.
Rarely Compatible
Aggressive species that may prey on the turquoise or any incredibly small specie,s such as shrimp, which may be eaten by the rainbow fish.
Feeding your Checkered Rainbow
Checkered rainbow fish will take aquarium foods very easily. They will take a wide range of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. By giving them a varied diet, it ensures that they have optimal nutrition.
The ideal diet would be a good quality floating food, supplemented with frozen bloodworms or black worms, or even live foods like baby brine shrimp or micro worms. Feeding any foods with natural colour enhancers would also be great, as this will really enhance the metallic yellows and oranges
