The Barcoo River Rainbow is from the Barcoo River in Central Australia. These fish inhabit one of the most unhospitable riverine environments in the world. Water temperatures vary wildly throughout the year.
Overnight low can be about 12 Celsius in summer with a daytime high in the 40s. In winter overnight lows can be below freezing, while the next day can be in the comfortable 20s (Celsius). General water quality is also under pressure as the flow of freshwater is infrequent to say the least.
This means, these rainbows make a very hardy aquarium fish. Able to suffer the consequences of the casual inexperienced fish keeper. A heater is not required under normal conditions for an indoor aquarium.
Aprox Size: 4.5cm

0Will these fish be ok in an outdoor pond with a high rated filter and oxygenating plants like parrot feather weed? It is for a cold climate with extreme seasonal temperatures.Read DetailSubmited by: Jo 29 Nov 2024

Hi Jo We would recommend the Murray River Rainbow in your situation compared to the Barcoo River Rainbow. Whilst there may be far more colourful species, the hardiness, size, and versatility of the Murray River Rainbow are completely unparalleled. These are one of the only true cold-water rainbowfish species that can even be kept outdoors in ponds through winter with no issues at all.Answered by Admin on 30 Nov 2024
