Checkerboard Discus

Discus have long been regarded as the pinnacle of freshwater aquarium fish due to their elegant shape, vibrant colours, and graceful swimming behaviour. Over many decades of selective breeding, aquarists have developed numerous stunning strains, and the Checkerboard Discus is one of the most striking among them.

Checkerboard discus display a fascinating pattern made up of intricate lines and markings that form a checker-like design across the body. The base colour may range from soft orange and red tones through to deeper copper shades, while the turquoise or blue patterning creates an almost glowing effect under aquarium lighting. Combined with the classic round discus body shape, this makes them a true centrepiece fish in the aquarium.

Sexing discus is extremely difficult, as males and females look almost identical. The most reliable way to form breeding pairs is to keep a small group of young fish and allow them to pair naturally. Discus are substrate spawners and typically lay eggs on vertical surfaces such as breeding cones or aquarium glass.

Tank Recommendations for Your Checkerboard Discus

Discus are large fish that require spacious aquariums with very stable water conditions. A minimum aquarium size of 250 litres is recommended. They thrive in warm water environments with temperatures between 28–30°C and appreciate aquariums with plenty of open swimming space, combined with plants or driftwood for cover.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Discus are peaceful fish and do best with other calm species that tolerate warm water.

Usually Compatible

Cardinal tetras, corydoras, German Blue Rams, and other peaceful fish.

Sometimes Compatible

Peaceful dwarf cichlids or small schooling fish.

Rarely Compatible

Feeding Your Checkerboard Discus

Checkerboard discus may be shy when first introduced but should take to prepared aquarium foods easily. Their ideal diet should consist of a good-quality pellet or flake, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrate-based foods such as brine shrimp or black worms.
