Checkerboard Cichlid - Wild Caught 3cm
Checkerboard Cichlid
The Checkerboard Cichlid is one of the most elegant and underrated dwarf cichlids available in the aquarium hobby. Wild-caught specimens are particularly desirable among enthusiasts because they display the most natural colours, body shape, and behaviours of the species. Originating from slow-moving blackwater environments in South America, these fish are perfect for natural planted aquariums and biotope-style setups.
Checkerboard cichlids display a slender, elongated dwarf cichlid body shape with beautiful, fine, checkerboard-like markings running across the body. The base colour is usually a pale gold to silvery cream, overlaid with intricate dark vertical and horizontal line work that creates the signature checkered appearance. Their dorsal and caudal fins may carry soft blue, yellow, or reddish edging depending on sex and condition. When kept in tannin-rich aquariums with driftwood and leaf litter, their colours deepen beautifully, and they display very graceful, slow movements through the lower water column.
Sexing wild checkerboard cichlids is possible through finnage and colour. Males usually develop longer dorsal and caudal fin extensions, while females remain slightly rounder. During breeding, they form pairs and deposit eggs in caves, under leaves, or on protected surfaces, where the female takes on most of the brood care.
Tank Recommendations for your Checkerboard Cichlid
A pair or small group can be comfortably kept in aquariums of 60 litres or larger. These fish thrive in blackwater-style aquariums with sand, driftwood, botanicals, caves, and dense plant cover. Softer acidic water and subdued lighting help them display their best natural behaviour and colouration.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Checkerboard cichlids are peaceful and ideal for calm, planted setups.
Usually Compatible
Small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids.
Sometimes Compatible
Shrimp or other nano fish in heavily planted tanks.

Feeding your Checkerboard Cichlid
During feeding is when the most care should be taken, as wild-caught dwarf cichlids can initially be shy feeders and may ignore dry foods until settled. These fish will, however, take a wide range of micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods.
