Bumble Bee Catfish 9cm

Pseudomystus siamensis
There are very few freshwater catfish that manage to combine personality, striking coloration, and manageable adult size quite like the Bumble Bee Catfish. These little predators have become incredibly popular among aquarists wanting something different for the bottom of the aquarium, and once settled in, they are fascinating fish to observe. While they may spend a good portion of the day hidden away, watching one emerge at feeding time quickly explains why they have become such a favourite.

Bumble Bee Catfish

There are very few freshwater catfish that manage to combine personality, striking coloration, and manageable adult size quite like the Bumble Bee Catfish. These little predators have become incredibly popular among aquarists wanting something different for the bottom of the aquarium, and once settled in, they are fascinating fish to observe. The Bumble Bee Catfish displays a bold series of jet-black bands separated by vibrant golden-yellow stripes running from head to tail, giving the fish its unmistakable common name. Its body is chunky with a broad, flattened head, large pectoral fins, and sensitive barbels that are constantly used to search for food during the evening. Under subdued lighting, the contrast between the yellow and black becomes even more striking, especially against darker substrates or driftwood, where these fish naturally spend much of their time. As they mature, the yellow develops a richer golden hue while the black bands become even darker.

Sexing Bumble Bee Catfish is extremely difficult, with males and females appearing almost identical externally. Captive breeding is relatively uncommon due to the lack of obvious sexual differences and specialised spawning requirements. In the wild, these fish inhabit slow-moving rivers where seasonal flooding is believed to trigger reproduction.

Tank Recommendations for your Bumble Bee Catfish

A minimum aquarium size of 120 litres is recommended for a single adult, with larger aquariums preferred if keeping multiple bottom-dwelling species. These fish appreciate numerous caves, driftwood, and shaded areas where they can comfortably hide throughout the day before becoming active during the evening. Sand or fine gravel substrates are ideal, as they spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the aquarium.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Bumble Bee Catfish are peaceful towards similarly sized fish but remain opportunistic predators.

Usually Compatible

Rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful cichlids such as severums and Geophagus, bristlenose catfish, and most medium-sized community fish that are too large to fit inside the catfish's mouth.

Sometimes Compatible

Other bottom-dwelling catfish, including Synodontis, Corydoras, or smaller plecos, may coexist well, provided there are plenty of hiding places and territories available.

Rarely Compatible

Small tetras, guppies, shrimp, and nano fish should generally be avoided, as the Bumble Bee Catfish may eventually attempt to eat any fish small enough to fit into its mouth.

Feeding your Bumble Bee Catfish

Bumble Bee Catfish are carnivorous scavengers and readily accept a wide variety of sinking foods. The ideal diet consists of quality carnivore pellets supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, prawns, and other meaty foods. As they become comfortable in the aquarium, many individuals will quickly learn to emerge from their caves as soon as food enters the water.
