Brown Ghost Knife Fish 8cm
Brown Ghost Knife Fish
The Brown Ghost Knife Fish is one of the most unique and fascinating freshwater fish available in the aquarium hobby. Known for its elongated body and smooth, almost eerie swimming motion, this species brings a completely different dynamic to the aquarium compared to typical fish. Native to South America, these fish are often sought after by aquarists looking for something unusual and captivating.
Brown Ghost Knife Fish have a long, slender body that tapers towards the tail and lacks a traditional dorsal fin. Instead, they possess a long, undulating anal fin that runs along the underside of the body, allowing them to glide effortlessly through the water in a smooth, wave-like motion. Their colour is typically a deep brown to dark chocolate tone, sometimes appearing almost black depending on lighting. This darker colouration makes them particularly striking in aquariums with contrasting substrates or dim lighting setups.
Sexing this species is extremely difficult because males and females are very similar. Breeding is rarely achieved in home aquariums due to their size and specific environmental requirements. In the wild, they inhabit slow-moving rivers and use electroreception to navigate and locate food in low-visibility conditions.
Tank Recommendations for your Brown Ghost Knife Fish
These fish require large aquariums due to their eventual size and activity level. A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended, though larger systems are ideal. A sandy substrate combined with driftwood, caves, and shaded areas helps replicate their natural environment. They prefer subdued lighting and plenty of hiding spaces where they can retreat during the day. Strong filtration and stable water conditions are essential.

Feeding your Brown Ghost Knife Fish
During feeding is when the most care should be taken for this species, as they are primarily nocturnal hunters and may struggle to compete with fast daytime feeders. These fish will take a wide range of foods, including pellets and frozen foods, but they strongly prefer protein-rich options. Due to their feeding behaviour, it is often best to feed them during lower light conditions or after lights out.
Just like any fish, they should be fed a varied diet with a mix of different foods. The ideal diet would be sinking carnivore pellets supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, or even live foods such as small worms or shrimp. Offering food in small portions and ensuring it reaches the bottom will help ensure they are being fed properly.
