Borneo Sucker 2cm
Borneo Sucker
The Borneo Sucker or spotted hillstream loach is an adorable and incredibly popular oddball fish. These species are known for their flattened, disc-like body which is perfectly adapted to life in strong currents. These fish thrive in aquariums designed to replicate their natural environment which is normally quite rocky, very well-oxygenated, and fast-flowing. Borneo suckers are also very peaceful temperament and their algae-grazing habits make them a great choice for aquarists that are chasing an intriguing yet beneficial addition to their tanks.
The colouration of borneo suckers normally includes a beige to brown base, which is overlaid with a pattern of black spots that run from head to tail. This causes the fish to actually contrast very well especially in a lighter environment or against lush green plants. The fins are broad and rounded quite like a stingray which is another reason why aquarists often get drawn to these fish. This species also only reaches a maximum size of about 6-7 cm, making it a compact and manageable choice for smaller aquariums. Their undersides reveal their specialised suction cup-like pelvic fins, which allow them to cling to rocks and glass.
These really are a peaceful and active fish that spends most of their time grazing on algae or biofilm on rocks, plants, and other surfaces. Borneo suckers a social species that thrive in groups of five or more, where they exhibit natural schooling and exploratory behaviour. Breeding in captivity is rare and requires specific conditions, including cooler water temperatures and strong flow. During spawning, eggs are scattered among rocks, and fry are left to fend for themselves. Ensuring ample biofilm and fine microfoods is key to supporting fry survival.
Tank Recommendations for your Borneo Sucker
To replicate their natural habitat, borneo suckers require an aquarium with strong water flow and highly oxygenated water. A minimum tank size of 70 litres is recommended for a small group. The tank should include a substrate of smooth pebbles or sand and plenty of rocks, driftwood, and other surfaces for grazing. Live plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or mosses can be included to create a naturalistic setting. Water conditions should mimic their native streams, with a temperature range of 20-24°C, a pH of 6.5-7.5, and excellent filtration. Regular water changes are essential to maintain pristine water quality.
Suitable Tank Buddies
The peaceful nature of the spotted hillstream loach makes them compatible with a wide variety of non-aggressive tank mates. However, they are best housed with species that share similar water parameter and flow requirements.
Usually Compatible
Small, peaceful schooling fish such as white cloud mountain minnows, danios, and small rasboras make excellent tank mates.
Sometime Compatible
Species with moderate aggression or slightly larger size, such as small gouramis or dwarf cichlids, may work in the same tank but require careful monitoring to ensure no bullying occurs.
Rarely Compatible
Avoid slow-moving or delicate species that may struggle with the strong flow, as well as large or aggressive fish like cichlids or predators that may harass or eat the loaches.
Feeding your Borneo Loach
The borneo loach is primarily an algae grazer and thrives on a diet rich in biofilm and vegetable matter. In the aquarium, supplementing its natural grazing with sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, sinking community fish pellets and blanched vegetables such as zucchini or cucumber will be great. Occasional treats of live or frozen foods like daphnia or bloodworms can provide additional protein, but plant-based foods should form the bulk of its diet. Providing a variety of surfaces for biofilm growth, such as smooth rocks, enhances their natural feeding behaviour.
