Blue Devil Tetra
There aren't many tetras that can rival rainbowfish when it comes to iridescence, but the Blue Devil Tetra comes remarkably close. Despite its relatively small size, this striking South American species flashes electric blues and metallic greens as it schools through the aquarium, making it one of the more underrated schooling fish available today.
The Blue Devil Tetra displays an intense metallic blue body that shimmers with turquoise and emerald highlights beneath aquarium lighting. Their streamlined shape and crystal-clear fins allow the brilliant body colour to remain the focal point, while mature fish often develop subtle golden reflections along the shoulders. Kept in larger schools, the constant movement of these metallic colours creates an incredible display in planted aquariums.
Sexing mature fish is relatively straightforward, with females developing a slightly deeper body than the slimmer, more colourful males. Like many tetras, they are egg scatterers, depositing adhesive eggs amongst fine-leaved plants without providing any parental care.
Tank Recommendations for your Blue Devil Tetra
Blue Devil Tetras should always be maintained in schools of 8 or more, with a minimum aquarium size of 75 litres. A planted aquarium with open swimming space, subdued lighting, and darker substrates will help maximise their stunning iridescent colours.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Blue Devil Tetras are peaceful schooling fish.
Usually Compatible
Rummynose tetras, cardinal tetras, corydoras, rasboras, dwarf rainbowfish, peaceful gouramis, and other community fish.
Sometimes Compatible
Angelfish and peaceful dwarf cichlids may coexist successfully, provided the tetras are maintained in a large school.
Rarely Compatible
Large predatory fish and aggressive cichlids should generally be avoided.
Feeding your Blue Devil Tetra
Blue Devil Tetras readily accept flakes, micro pellets, and frozen foods. A varied diet supplemented with baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms will maximise colour while maintaining excellent health.
