Discus have held the pinnacle position in the freshwater aquarium hobby for decades, and selective breeding has transformed the naturally patterned fish of the Amazon into an incredible range of colours that would never be encountered in the wild. Blue strains have always been particularly popular because the tall, rounded body of a discus provides the perfect canvas for metallic colouration. The Blue Angel Discus from IP Discus is a beautiful example, combining a clean overall appearance with brilliant shades of blue that become considerably stronger as the fish matures.

The Blue Angel Discus develops a beautiful pale blue to turquoise body, with metallic colouration extending from the face through the flanks and into the dorsal and anal fins. Depending on the individual, the centre of the body can remain slightly lighter, whilst deeper cobalt and electric blue tones develop around the outer edges, giving the fish additional depth when viewed under aquarium lighting. Fine turquoise markings may also become visible around the face and gill plates as the fish matures. Rather than relying on heavy contrasting patterns, the appeal of this strain comes from how clean and consistent the blue colouration becomes. Against a black background and surrounded by green plants, the metallic blues really shine through and make a mature group an incredible centrepiece.

Distinguishing males and females in discus is extremely difficult, with very few reliable visual differences between the sexes. The most successful method is to raise a group of juveniles and allow compatible pairs to form naturally. Once paired, they will lay rows of adhesive eggs on a smooth, vertical surface before both parents carefully guard the eggs. After hatching, the fry initially feed on the specialised mucus produced by the skin of both parents, which remains one of the most fascinating breeding behaviours found amongst freshwater aquarium fish.

Tank Recommendations for Your Blue Angel Discus

Blue Angel Discus are large-growing fish, reaching around 20 cm, and require stable, high-quality water conditions. A minimum aquarium size of 250 litres is recommended for a group, although larger aquariums provide considerably better water stability.

A taller planted aquarium with driftwood and plenty of open swimming space provides an excellent environment. Stable temperatures, excellent filtration, and regular water changes are incredibly important when maintaining discus. A darker background is particularly effective with the Blue Angel, as it allows the pale turquoise and deeper metallic blue colours to become the main focal point.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Blue Angel Discus are peaceful fish and should be maintained alongside calm community species capable of tolerating their warmer water requirements.

Usually Compatible

Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, German blue rams, peaceful bristlenose catfish, and other gentle South American community species.

Sometimes Compatible

Angelfish, larger peaceful tetras, and smaller Geophagus can coexist successfully in larger aquariums. However, competition for food and territorial behaviour should be monitored.

Rarely Compatible

Tiger barbs, aggressive cichlids, highly active rainbowfish, and large predatory species should generally be avoided, as they may stress the discus or continually outcompete them during feeding.

Feeding Your Blue Angel Discus

Blue Angel Discus thrive on a varied, high-quality diet. The ideal diet would consist of a quality slow-sinking discus pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. A varied diet will maintain excellent body condition whilst helping the metallic blue colouration develop to its full potential.
