Black Lancer Catfish

The Black Lancer Catfish is a striking and unique species that stands out among freshwater catfish due to its sleek, jet-black body and contrasting simplicity. This Black Lancer Catfish is a visually intriguing oddball addition to any well-thought-out aquarium, particularly one with darker substrates and dimmer lighting that enhances its dramatic appearance.

Black lancer catfish have a very interesting body shape with what almost looks like camel humps on their back. They sport these raised curves where their dorsal fins come from, but just overall, their body shape is very different compared to other catfish. These fish are nocturnal by nature, preferring to stay hidden during the day and becoming more active at night. They are known for their calm and reserved temperament, making them a suitable addition to peaceful community aquariums. Despite their somewhat shy behaviour, Black Lancer Catfish have an elegant and graceful swimming style that is mesmerising to watch when they do emerge from hiding.

Sexing Black Lancer Catfish is quite difficult, and breeding them in captivity is a rare achievement. They are typically wild-caught from Southeast Asian rivers, where they inhabit slow-moving waters with soft, acidic conditions. Creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat can help reduce stress and promote healthier, more vibrant fish.

Tank Recommendations for your Black Lancer Catfish

The Black Lancer Catfish can grow up to 25 cm in length, so a minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended. This species will appreciate a well-planted aquarium with driftwood, caves, and rock formations that provide plenty of hiding spots. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal, as coarser substrates can damage their delicate barbels.

Providing dim lighting or shaded areas is crucial for their comfort, as they prefer a more subdued environment. Slow to moderate water flow will best replicate their natural habitat and keep them at ease. Regular water changes are also essential to maintain water quality, as they are more sensitive to fluctuations in parameters than some other species.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Black Lancer Catfish are generally peaceful and compatible with a wide range of other non-aggressive, medium-sized fish. Their nocturnal nature means they tend to avoid conflict, but it's important to avoid tank mates that may harass or outcompete them for food.

Usually Compatible

Tetras, Rasboras, Gouramis, Corydoras, Plecos, Rainbowfish, and Dwarf Cichlids such as Rams and Apistogramma.

Sometimes Compatible

Semi-aggressive cichlids, such as Angelfish or Discus, can be compatible in larger aquariums with ample hiding spots. Larger, peaceful cichlids such as Uaru or Severums may also be suitable if introduced carefully.

Rarely Compatible

Large predatory species like Oscars, Jack Dempseys, or Jaguar Cichlids may view the Black Lancer Catfish as prey or harass them. Fin-nipping species like Tiger Barbs should also be avoided.

Feeding your Black Lancer Catfish

As a nocturnal omnivore, the Black Lancer Catfish will accept a variety of foods, but they prefers protein-rich diets. Providing them with a mix of sinking pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or blackworms will keep them healthy and vibrant. Since they are most active at night, it's best to feed them during the evening or shortly after the aquarium lights are turned off.
