Betta Krataios 5cm
Betta Krataios
Wild Betta species have become increasingly popular over recent years as more hobbyists discover that there is far more to the Betta genus than just Betta splendens. Betta krataios is one of the rarer species available, prized for its natural beauty, fascinating behaviour, and suitability for dedicated species aquariums. While they don't possess the extravagant finnage of selectively bred fighting fish, they more than make up for it with subtle colours and an authentic wild appearance.
Betta krataios displays a slender body with rich earthy tones ranging from chocolate brown through to olive green, overlaid with beautiful iridescent blue and emerald highlights that shimmer depending on the lighting. Mature males develop stronger colours and more extended finnage than females, particularly during breeding displays where the throat, fins, and body become considerably more vibrant. Their streamlined body and shorter fins allow them to move gracefully through densely planted aquariums, giving them a very different feel compared to domestic Bettas.
Sexing mature fish is relatively straightforward, with males displaying stronger colours and slightly extended finnage. Betta krataios are paternal mouthbrooders, meaning the male carries the fertilised eggs inside his mouth until the fry are fully developed and ready to be released. This fascinating breeding strategy is one of the main reasons wild Betta species have become so popular among enthusiasts.
Tank Recommendations for your Betta krataios
A minimum aquarium size of 40 litres is recommended for a pair or small group.
A heavily planted aquarium with driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting best replicates their natural habitat. Gentle filtration and calm water are preferred, while floating plants help these fish feel secure.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Betta krataios are considerably more peaceful than domestic fighting fish and can often be maintained in carefully planned community aquariums.
Usually Compatible
Small rasboras, ember tetras, kuhli loaches, pygmy corydoras, and other peaceful nano fish that appreciate soft, warm water.
Sometimes Compatible
Other peaceful wild Betta species or small gouramis may coexist successfully in larger aquariums with plenty of visual barriers.
Rarely Compatible
Aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping barbs, and larger predatory fish should generally be avoided due to their peaceful nature.
Feeding your Betta krataios
Betta krataios are carnivorous and thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet. Quality Betta pellets, combined with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia and baby brine shrimp, will keep these fish in excellent condition while encouraging natural breeding behaviour.
