Assorted Paradise Fish

The Paradise Fish is arguably one of the most underrated freshwater species in the aquarium hobby. Not only are these fish incredibly hardy and cold-water tolerant, but they are also full of character and display a dazzling variety of colours and fin shapes. Hailing from East Asia, Paradise Fish are closely related to gouramis and share the same hardy, labyrinth-breathing nature. Assorted Paradise Fish refers to a mix of selectively bred colour morphs, such as vivid blue, intense super red, subtle apricot, and even albino varieties. This assortment makes them a dynamic and visually exciting addition to any aquarium.

Each fish within the assortment may differ in colour and patterning, but they all share the same iconic features: large, expressive eyes, flowing fins, and bold personalities. As juveniles, their colouration may appear subdued, but as they mature, their full vibrancy shines through. Blues, reds, oranges, and pearlescent whites can all be seen across this selection, often combined in bands or tiger-like striping. With their elongated, oval bodies and oversized, flared fins, these fish make true centrepieces, especially when displaying to one another. As they are cold-water tolerant, a temperature range of 10–26 degrees offers plenty of flexibility. For the best colour and personality, however, it is recommended to keep them on the warmer end, at 22–24 degrees.

Paradise Fish, being related to bettas and gouramis, offer a similar flair in personality, spending much of their time out in the open. Breeding is possible, as males and females can be easily distinguished. Males grow larger, develop deeper colours, and have longer fins. They will build a bubble nest and deposit the eggs released by the females into the nest. The fry can then be raised in a separate aquarium once they reach the free-swimming stage.

Tank Recommendations for your Assorted Paradise Fish

As Paradise Fish remain fairly small and are extremely hardy, the recommended minimum tank size is around 40 litres. They can become slightly territorial in smaller environments, so a larger aquarium is preferable if tank mates are planned.

Paradise Fish thrive in densely planted aquariums. In the wild, they inhabit vegetation-heavy, slow-moving waters, so replicating this environment in the home aquarium is ideal. Substrate and hardscape choices are not critical, as these fish tend to occupy the upper to mid-water column.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Paradise Fish can be kept either solitary or with others of their own species. Like gouramis, they can be slightly territorial in smaller spaces, which should be taken into consideration. Otherwise, they can be housed with a range of peaceful fish.

Usually Compatible
Honey gourami, goldfish, white cloud mountain minnows, zebra danios, and similar nano or cold-water-tolerant species.

Sometimes Compatible
Bettas, which may become agitated by similarly large-finned species, and fin-nippers such as rosy barbs that may damage the fins of Paradise Fish, potentially leading to infection or health issues.

Rarely Compatible
Large or aggressive species that may prey on Paradise Fish, as well as fish that significantly outcompete them in size, such as koi.

Feeding your Assorted Paradise Fish

Paradise Fish readily accept a wide range of aquarium foods. Like many easy-to-care-for species, they will eat pellets, flakes, frozen foods, and invertebrate-based live foods such as worms.
