The Axolotl (or "Walking Fish") are very popular pets for an unheated aquarium.
They can grow up to 30cm in size and make excellent pets living an average of 10 years, so a tank no smaller then 60cm x 30cm x 30cm would be sufficient.
They mainly feed by smell as they have poorly developed eyesight and prefer to eat at dusk, earthworms being one of their favorite foods, best to not have a deep substrate to ensure the earthworms cannot bury themselves out of reach for the Axolotl to eat.
Dry foods suitable are turtle pellets, they do well with these also.
Only feeding them every 2 days is sufficient, when it is cooler (say 10-15 degrees in the water) they will eat less so be careful not to overfeed at these times. Remember to always remove uneaten food to ensure no pollution occurs within the tank.
If kept with fish, ensure the fish do not bite the axolotl's gills and ensure the axolotl has plenty of hiding places within the tank like rocks, plants, cut plastic pipes etc.
And also not be housed with fish small enough for the axolotl to eat them, but ultimately best not to have them in a tank with other fish.

Scientific name - Ambystoma Mexicanum

Water Quality
· Temperature: 10°C - 20°C.
· pH: 7.0 - 7.5
· General Hardness: 150 - 200 ppm.

The Axolotl is a neotenic amphibian: unlike related species they do not metamorphose into a salamander instead remaining/breeding in the "juvenile" stage.
Please do not take them out of the Aquarium to crawl on land as they cannot breathe out of water as they are fully aquatic.
They are able to regenerate damaged limbs and gills.

Are the axolotl’s old enough to be sexed? Am I able to see a picture of the olive colour as I’m not quite sure what it looks like. How long does it usually take to ship? Thanks

    • The 15cm can be sexed - when you place your order you will be prompted to select a colour, you can also add a note for the requested sex - we just cannot 100% guarantee gender as it will depend on what is available at the time of packing your order but our team will do their best to accomodate

What equipment and decorations do you recommend for our animal enclosure? And what is essential for your axolotl.

    • They like a substrate of either fine sand, Larger pebble style gravel (big enough they can't swallow it) or a bare bottom (no substrate).

Nothing sharp in the tank, they like to have a place to hide like caves.

Filter that has a slower flow, you don't want fast water movement if possible.
