The Axolotl, also known as the Mexican Walking Fish, is one of the most fascinating and unusual amphibians kept in the aquarium hobby. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls remain in their larval stage throughout their entire life, a phenomenon known as neoteny. This gives them their signature appearance, with feathery external gills, a wide mouth, and a lizard-like body.

Assorted Axolotl

The Axolotl, also known as the Mexican Walking Fish, is one of the most fascinating and unusual amphibians kept in the aquarium hobby. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls remain in their larval stage throughout their entire life, a phenomenon known as neoteny. This gives them their signature appearance, with feathery external gills, a wide mouth, and a lizard-like body.

These assorted axolotls come in a variety of different colours and morphs, ranging from the wild type with its dark, speckled appearance to albino, leucistic, melanoid, and golden varieties. Each morph has its own unique charm, but all share the same playful and curious behaviour that has made them so beloved by aquarists.

Axolotls are native to the lakes of Xochimilco and Chalco in Mexico but are now critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and pollution. Fortunately, they have become well established in the aquarium hobby and are bred frequently in captivity. Despite their endangered status in the wild, axolotls are quite hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.

Tank Recommendations for Your Assorted Axolotl

Axolotls can reach a size of up to 30 cm, so a minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended for a single individual. Due to their cool-water preference, temperatures should be kept between 14–18°C, as higher temperatures can cause stress and health problems.

A bare-bottom tank or smooth sand substrate is preferred to prevent impaction, as axolotls may accidentally ingest gravel while feeding. Providing caves, hides, and plants is ideal to offer them areas of shade and security. Lighting should be dim, as axolotls have sensitive eyes.

While they are primarily aquatic, axolotls do not require a land area. Their water should be well filtered, but strong currents should be avoided as they prefer calm, still waters. Regular water changes and maintaining clean water conditions are essential for their health.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Axolotls are generally best kept alone or with other axolotls of similar size. They have poor eyesight and may accidentally nip at tank mates, especially smaller fish or invertebrates.

Usually Compatible

Mystery snails, very peaceful nano fish like medaka, and other axolotls.

Sometimes Compatible

Large, peaceful community fish that are unlikely to attack or harass the axolotl.

Rarely Compatible

Fin-nipping species like tiger barbs, as they can pick on the gills of the axolotls. Aggressive species should also be avoided for predation reasons.

Feeding Your Assorted Axolotl

Axolotls are carnivorous and should be fed a diet of protein-rich foods. They will readily accept earthworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and specially formulated axolotl pellets. It's essential to provide them with high-quality, varied foods to maintain their health and vibrant colours.
