Apistogramma Peru PurpleApistogramma is a group of dwarf South American cichlids that come in plenty of species that range in colours, patterns, sizes and shapes. Given the endless options there are, some species tend to be much rarer than others or are seasonal with often just one or two batches ever being traded per year. One such uncommon species is the purple Apistogramma. This species is not all that clearly documented which just adds to their rare allure and will be a perfect breeding project for aquarists to attempt to spawn. They will however make for a fantastic nano display fish as well and can really be enjoyed in both a vibrant planted tank or biotope tank.As their name suggests the Apistogramma purple really do have a purple hue from head to tail but this is really broken up through their fin patterns and lateral lines. The body is a light lavender colour contested by the deep purple lateral line which almost verges on black. This darker purple also presents itself over the back of the fish and through a series of spots and striations on all the fins. Like a lot of other Apistogramma species these fish also have extravagant fins that they love to flare and show off with amongst one another.Breeding apistogramma cichlids is a rewarding experience. These fish are cave spawners, with the female taking care of the eggs and fry while the male guards the territory. After the eggs are laid and fertilised, they will hatch in about 3-4 days, and the fry will become free swimming in another 5-7 days. Parents both do care and guard the fry which is why these fish make for such a great beginner breeding species in the cichlid world.
