Rainbowfish are one of the fish groups that truly put Australia on the aquarium map. With dozens of naturally occurring variants across the country, each river system seems to produce its own subtle twist on colour and patterning. The Macculloch rainbowfish is a fantastic example of this diversity and is a particularly interesting species for collectors looking to keep something a little different from the more commonly available rainbowfish.

30x Local FD Rainbow Macculloch

Rainbowfish are one of the fish groups that truly put Australia on the aquarium map. With dozens of naturally occurring variants across the country, each river system seems to produce its own subtle twist on colour and patterning. The Macculloch rainbowfish is a fantastic example of this diversity and is a particularly interesting species for collectors looking to keep something a little different from the more commonly available rainbowfish.

Macculloch rainbowfish have a classic rainbowfish body shape, with a slightly compressed, torpedo-like form and a pointed head that gives them an active and streamlined appearance. Their body displays a soft silver base colour with subtle green and blue iridescence that becomes more pronounced under aquarium lighting. Mature individuals often develop a faint golden tone across the sides along with broken horizontal stripes, while the fins may show light orange or reddish hues. When kept in a group, these colours really shine as the fish move through the aquarium in tight schools.

Breeding Macculloch rainbowfish in captivity is relatively straightforward and can be achieved in well-maintained aquariums. Like many rainbowfish species, they are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs amongst fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Eggs typically hatch after around a week, depending on temperature, and the fry can be raised on infusoria or powdered fry foods before moving onto baby brine shrimp.

Tank Recommendations for Your 30x Local FD Rainbow Macculloch

Due to their active swimming behaviour and the large number of fish included in this pack, an aquarium of at least 400 litres is recommended. This allows the full school to swim comfortably and leaves room for additional compatible species.

These fish appreciate aquariums with plenty of open swimming space, as well as plants or driftwood along the sides and back. Rainbowfish are primarily mid- to upper-water column swimmers, so substrate choice is not critical, though sand or fine gravel tends to look the most natural. A secure lid is also recommended, as rainbowfish can be enthusiastic jumpers.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Macculloch rainbowfish are peaceful and make great additions to larger community aquariums. Their active nature means they do best with similarly energetic species.

Usually Compatible

Other rainbowfish species, larger tetra species such as Congo or lemon tetras, and danios.

Sometimes Compatible

Angelfish, peaceful cichlids, and bottom-dwelling species such as corydoras.

Rarely Compatible

Aggressive or predatory species that may harass or prey on rainbowfish.

Feeding Your 30x Local FD Rainbow Macculloch

Rainbowfish are extremely easy to feed and will readily accept a wide range of aquarium foods. High-quality flakes or floating pellets make an excellent staple diet and can be supplemented with frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or blackworms. A varied diet is always recommended, as it helps maintain strong health and brings out the natural colours of these beautiful fish.
