Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish

The Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish is mainly sunflower yellow. It also has a black spot just above the pectoral fin and a smaller black spot where the tail fan starts. It has a thin orange line running from its snout straight through its eye, all the way to the tail.

Some variations can occur depending on age and sex like the males having narrow red stripes. Females get more orange as the red stripes develop, and little youngsters are bright yellow with no stripes.

The dominant male will be the largest fish in the group, while the smaller fish will remain female. If the dominant male dies, the largest female switches sexes and assumes his position.

The Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish is endemic to the Indo-Pacific region. It can be found as far North as Southern Japan, All the way down South To New Zealand, and as far West as Madagascar.

Tank Recommendations for your Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish
The minimum tank size for this species is 270 litres

The Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish likes plenty of hiding places, so plenty of stacked live rock is important.

A well-oxygenated tank is also required, as this is an active fish.

Its natural feeding habit is scavenging for small crustaceans and worms, so a substrate of about 5 or 6cm is preferred.

Suitable Tank Buddies
Like other Hogfish, your Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish can get quite aggressive and specifically with other yellow coloured fish. If you want a drama-free tank stick to the other colours of the rainbow. The least drama will be found with fish of similar or slightly less aggression levels.

Usually Compatible
Tankmates that will provide the least drama in your aquarium are Groupers, Angelfish, Hawkfishes, and semi-aggressive Triggerfish.

Sometime Compatible
They are moderately aggressive so care should be taken with smaller, less aggressive fish. Care should be taken with Batfish, Blennies, Cardinalfish, and Eels. Some Triggerfish and Wrasse can also pose an aggression problem. These can be avoided unless it’s a much larger tank.

Rarely Compatible
Seahorses and Pipefish are not recommended as tank buddies as they won’t be able to compete for the same food source. Sharks and other large predators should not be mixed either.

Feeding your Two Spot Yellow Candy Hogfish
This Hogfish is a carnivore, so it needs a meat-based diet of fortified brine shrimp, mysis, black worms, and other meaty marine-based frozen foods, including flake foods. It should be fed two or three times a day unless you have live worms present in your substrate.

If you're having trouble getting your fish to eat, consider live foods like black worms or enriched brine shrimp.
