Sulphur Crest Peacock
African peacock cichlids have developed a cult following thanks to their unmatched colours and personality. Their vibrancy often rivals that of saltwater species, making them a prime choice for freshwater aquarists seeking a striking display tank. Many popular peacock varieties are the result of selective breeding, but some, like the Sulphur Crest Peacock, are naturally occurring and prized for their distinct, refined beauty. This species features bold yellow markings and royal blue colouration, giving it an electric yet elegant appearance.
The Sulphur Crest Peacock sports a brilliant metallic blue body, with a distinct yellow blaze that runs across the crest of the head and sometimes onto the dorsal fin. This golden highlight is where it earns its common name and stands out vividly against the deep blue. The body colour is uniform and shimmers under aquarium lighting, while the fins are long, elegant, and may have flecks of yellow or iridescence. Males are especially vivid, showing richer colours and extended finnage, while females are typically more muted, with subtle silvery-blue tones. As with other peacocks, Sulphur Crest males can be semi-aggressive, particularly during breeding or territorial disputes. This species originates from Lake Malawi and is one of the more sought-after naturally occurring Aulonocara.
Identifying males and females in Sulphur Crest Peacocks is fairly straightforward. Males are generally more colourful and have longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins. Females remain smaller and duller, with rounded fins and a lack of the yellow crest. These differences become more pronounced as the fish mature, especially under proper lighting and care in the home aquarium.
Tank Recommendations for your Sulphur Crest Peacock
The Sulphur Crest Peacock is a very active fish that needs a tank of at least 470 litres (approximately 4 feet in length). The main consideration is the aquarium environment itself. Since Sulphur Crest Peacocks can be aggressive toward one another, it is best to provide plenty of visual breaks in the tank.
These fish also require a higher pH of around 8.0, which can be maintained through the use of crushed coral, aragonite sand, or conditioning salts. To make the colours of Sulphur Crest Peacocks truly pop, keeping them against a black background is recommended.
Suitable Tank Buddies
The Sulphur Crest Peacock is fairly peaceful and can be kept with other colour variations of the peacock species. Overstocking peacocks is sometimes used to reduce aggression or territorial behaviour; however, this can increase water changes and maintenance. A better approach is to keep fewer fish in a large aquarium with plenty of visual breaks. Consider keeping them with peaceful Mbunas or Haps.
Usually Compatible:
Other African peacocks, such as dragon bloods or neon blues, and common species like electric yellow labs.
Sometimes Compatible:
Larger Haps, such as venustus, Fuscodichromis, and smaller other African cichlids like Julidochromis.
Rarely Compatible:
Shrimp and nano aquarium fish such as neon tetras or ember tetras, as well as very aggressive South American cichlids such as Oscars and Jaguar cichlids.
Feeding your Sulphur Crest Peacock
Sulphur Crest Peacocks are easy to feed. They are opportunistic feeders and will readily eat a wide range of foods, including dry, fresh, and frozen options. Their diet should include high-quality African cichlid pellets with a good spirulina or vegetable content. Feeding once a day is sufficient to keep them healthy and vibrant.
