For the aquarists chasing a natural, simplistic yet elegant fish for their planted aquarium, the checker barb would be an amazing consideration. Oftentimes, when creating a highly details and intricate aquascape, you want a more subtle fish to not detract from the spectacle of the environment, and this species would be perfect for that. Their darker colour palette, schooling behaviour, playful nature, and algae-eating capabilities are all reasons why these underrated fish should be in almost every community system.

Lovely pattern5 of these guys (and 6 Odessa barbs) arrived this morning to add to a barb tank with 9 fully grown Rosy barbs. Was a little worried about the size difference and the older ones bullying the new inhabitants, but as they are in a large group they aren't being too aggressive. It's only been around 12 hours but they are starting to colour up nicely.

Photo looks better than the specimens themselvesI bought 3 of these guys to see how they'd look in my tank.
I have a heavily planted and decorated large tank.
The female is very plain, and the males are nice, but nothing like the picture identifies. I wanted purple to add to my colour, no purple came out of them even when feeding them colour bites and keeping them for ages.
Also, they aren't so peaceful. They would chase my corydoras, Tetras & Guppies. Even nipping at their fins. Once I seen ratty fins on my delightful fish, I immediately gave away these Barbs, and now my tank is back to its harmonious balance once again.Posted on

Checker barbs are a great small community tank fishI got checker barbs as an experiment. I wanted to see how a large tank would look with large schools of small barbs, and checker barbs were one of the species i chose. They turned out to be very hardy, and their colouration brightens up nicely when in combination with others of their and related species.
They do best in a large school. Buy them when on sale and get at least 20.Posted on
