Red ramshorn snails as the name suggests have a bright red colour with a classic curly snail shell that loosely resembles the look of a ram's horn. Their vibrant red colour makes them easily spotted in the aquarium and this colour can also carry shades of orange, brown, and shiny copper notes as well. They are true aquatic snails that can spend their entire life underwater and are fantastic green algae and detritus consumers which will assist in the overall cleanliness of the aquarium.
Aquatic snails like the red ram's horn often get a bad reputation because of how easily they can reproduce. All it takes is a single snail in an aquarium and since these species can reproduce without a mate, they can at times get to relatively high numbers. This is usually a direct result of the available food in the aquarium and once the snails deplete this source their numbers should stabilize however there are many other snail control methods such as traps and snail-eating fish. They can also make for a great sales opportunity which is always fun as well and can assist in supporting your aquarium hobby even further.
These ramshorn snails can thrive in a wide range of aquarium settings, tank sizes, and a large temperature range of 8 - 28 degrees. They will usually thrive in most aquarium settings as well and often do not require any direct care. In the wild, these ramshorn snails originate all through Europe to Asia.
Tank Recommendations for your Red Ramshorn Snails
Red ramshorn snails will often end up thriving in established aquariums as little as 20 liters. The aquarium size or dimension is not really a direct concern as long as there is food and maintained water parameters for the snails, they will do great. The only concern may be low PH as the snails do require calcium to formulate their shells, this however can be supplemented through their food or through a water buffer.
Suitable Tank Buddies
The ramshorn snail can basically thrive with any aquarium fish that does not view it as prey. They are a great fish to add to the community or planted aquariums but will also thrive in African or South American cichlid aquariums as well.
Usually Compatible
Goldfish, gourami, Apistogramma, tetras, and a wide range of community fish species.
Sometime Compatible
Large growing fish species that may view the snails as a food source. Ramshorn snails do actually make for a great food source for fish because of how fast they reproduce but if you do not want this to occur then it may be best to just keep them with community fish.
Rarely Compatible
Natural predators of snails such as clown loaches, yoyo loaches ad freshwater puffer fish.
Feeding your Ramshorn Snails
Ramshorn snails often do not need any additional feeding in a well-established aquarium. They will often clean up the scraps that settle in the tank as well as eat any soft green algae. If they are being added to a new aquarium, then it may be better to feed them occasionally with a sinking aquarium algae wafer.
