Angelfish are a staple of the aquarium hobby, and selective breeding has produced a wide range of colour and scale variations. The Red Headed Pearlscale Angelfish is a particularly eye-catching strain that combines the textured pearlscale body with a striking red or orange head, creating a strong visual contrast.

This strain typically features a pale silver to white body with pearlscale texturing that reflects light in a subtle shimmering pattern. The defining feature is the bold red or orange colouration concentrated around the head and face, which stands out sharply against the lighter body. As the fish matures, this contrast becomes even more pronounced. The long flowing fins remain elegant and semi-transparent, often carrying faint colour highlights that complement the head marking.

Sexing angelfish remains difficult, though mature pairs will often form naturally and spawn on vertical surfaces such as leaves or aquarium glass. Both parents may guard the eggs and fry once hatched.

Angelfish require aquariums with good height and swimming space, with a minimum size of 150 litres recommended. Planted aquariums with vertical structures work best. A darker background or substrate helps the red head colouration stand out more strongly.

Feeding your Red Headed Pearlscale Angelfish

These fish are very easy to feed and will accept a wide range of foods. The ideal diet would be a quality flake or slow-sinking pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms or brine shrimp to maintain strong health and colouration.
