Radiata Lionfish - Medium
The Radiata Lionfish is a highly sought-after species in the aquarium trade. It is less common than other Lionfish species and commands a higher price. But its striking appearance and hardy demeanour make it worthwhile.
The Radiata Lionfish is similar in appearance to the Antennata Lionfish. It can be identified as a different species by the lines which appear on its caudal peduncle. It has black, white, and red vertical stripes over its body. The pectoral fins are fan-like, while its tall dorsal fins resemble quills. The dorsal fin consists of 10-12 soft rays and 12 or 13 spines. These spines are venomous, and care should be taken when handling them. If stung, the reaction may be similar to a bee sting. It is recommended to soak the affected area in hot water and seek medical attention.
Identifying the sex of the Radiata Lionfish is difficult. Attempts to breed it in captivity have proved unsuccessful.
This species can be found in the western Indo-Pacific area. Common locations areas include the Red Sea, South Africa, Indonesia, and Australia. They inhabit rocky reef areas at depths of up to 25 metres.
Tank Recommendations for your Radiata Lionfish
Tank capacity should be at least 70 gallons (265 litres).
In the wild, Radiata Lionfish are often found in caves and crevices. A suitable aquarium should try to replicate this environment using live rock. It isn't suitable for a reef environment as it may eat smaller fish and invertebrates.
A tank should have excellent filtration, and water needs to be highly oxygenated.
Suitable Tank Buddies
The Radiata Lionfish is semi-aggressive. In larger tanks, they can be kept as a pair or with other types of Scorpionfish or Rockfish.
The most suitable tank buddies are larger fish that won't bother them.
Usually Compatible
A mated pair can be kept in a suitably large tank. The same applies to a group of conspecifics, or other Rockfish or Scorpionfish. Large Angelfish, Pufferfish, and Tangs are also suitable.
Sometime Compatible
Dwarf Angelfish, Anthias, Grunts, and Sweetlips will need monitoring. Care should also be taken with Parrotfish, Triggerfish, and Wrasses.
Rarely Compatible
This species will try to eat fish that are smaller than itself. It is also a threat to invertebrates. Avoid fish such as Basslets, Blennies, Clownfish, Gobies, and Dartfish. Seahorses and Pipefish should be kept in a separate tank.
Feeding your Radiata Lionfish
The Radiata Lionfish is a carnivore. It will enjoy a selection of live and meaty foods, such as fish, shrimp, or crustacean flesh. Live saltwater feeder shrimp is great for enticing it to eat. It is recommended to soak foods in vitamin supplements. Feed 1-2 times per day.
