Pseudotropheus elongatus

The Pseudotropheus Mphanga, also known as the Mphanga Cichlid, is a vibrant, eye-catching fish that brings a burst of colour and activity to the African cichlid aquarium. Their striking appearance, relatively small size, and lively nature make them a desirable addition to a Lake Malawi aquarium or similar setup. Keep in mind, however, that these fish can be more territorial and aggressive compared to most African cichlids, so careful consideration of tank mates is essential.

Pseudotropheus Elongatus Mphanga

The Pseudotropheus Mphanga, also known as the Mphanga Cichlid, is a vibrant, eye-catching fish that brings a burst of colour and activity to the African cichlid aquarium. Their striking appearance, relatively small size, and lively nature make them a desirable addition to a Lake Malawi aquarium or similar setup. Keep in mind, however, that these fish can be more territorial and aggressive compared to most African cichlids, so careful consideration of tank mates is essential.

The Pseudotropheus elongatus "Mphanga" features the classic elongated, slender mbuna body shape that sets it apart from other chunkier species. Their vibrant electric blue body is marked by bold, black barring that leads into a yellow-tipped dorsal fin and a completely yellow tail fin. Under strong white LED aquarium lighting, their colours absolutely pop, creating a dazzling spectacle. Males tend to show more intense colouration, but females are still very vibrant compared to many other cichlid species. They reach a maximum size of around 8-9 cm, making them a great choice for smaller Malawi cichlid setups while still offering plenty of energy and movement.

Breeding Mphanga elongatus cichlids in captivity is quite achievable, though managing their aggression can be challenging. Like most mbuna, they are maternal mouthbrooders. After spawning, the female will carry fertilised eggs in her mouth for about 21 days until the fry are fully formed and ready to swim. There is no parental care after release. Having multiple females per male and providing plenty of hiding spaces greatly improves breeding success while reducing aggression.

Tank Recommendations for your Pseudo. Elongatus Mphanga

A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended for a group of these fish. To replicate their natural habitat, provide plenty of rock work with caves and crevices for hiding and territory establishment. Having a lot of visual breaks will be great to diffuse the aggression. A sandy substrate is ideal, and water temperature should be maintained between 24-28°C with a pH level of 7.8-8.6.

Suitable Tank Buddies

The Pseudotropheus Mphanga can be quite aggressive, especially towards other cichlids of similar size or appearance. It is essential to choose tankmates wisely to ensure no fish gets injured or stressed.

Usually Compatible

Other Mbuna cichlids with different color patterns, larger peaceful Malawi cichlids, catfish, and other robust species.

Sometimes Compatible

Smaller, more peaceful cichlids, such as shell dwellers, may be harassed by the Mphanga. It is better to avoid species smaller than these cichlids.

Rarely Compatible

Fish with similar colour patterns, slow-moving fish, or small, timid species, which may be bullied or injured by the aggressive Mphanga. Larger cichlids like eye biters may also eat the Mphanga

Feeding your Pseudotropheus Mphanga

Mphanga Cichlids are primarily herbivorous, and their diet should be rich in plant-based foods. Provide high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes with a vegetable component, as well as blanched vegetables like spinach, peas, or zucchini. Occasional protein-rich treats, such as brine shrimp or daphnia, can also be offered.
