Pristella Tetra
The Pristella Tetra, also known as the X-ray Tetra, is a small, peaceful schooling fish native to South America. Its unique transparent appearance, combined with its ease of care, make it a popular choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. Pristella Tetras are a stunning addition to a community tank or a biotope setup, and their social nature makes them ideal for groups of at least 6 or more.
Pristella Tetras have a translucent body with a hint of silver, which gives them the appearance of an X-ray, hence their other common name. Though the body is near see-through, the most striking features of this tetra are the black and yellow bands on their dorsal and anal fins, which contrast beautifully against their grey bodies. These fish typically reach a maximum length of 5 cm, making them suitable for smaller tanks as well.
Breeding Pristella Tetras is relatively simple, as they follow a similar pattern to other tetra species. Providing a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop will encourage the female to scatter her eggs. The male will fertilize the eggs, but neither parent will protect the eggs or fry. It is essential to remove the adult fish after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs or young fish.
Tank Recommendations for your Pristella Tetra
As Pristella Tetras are small and enjoy being in groups, a minimum tank size of 70 liters is recommended. These fish are active swimmers and will appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of open space for swimming. A soft, sandy substrate with driftwood and rocks for hiding is also ideal. Pristella Tetras prefer slightly acidic water with a pH of 6.0-7.0 and a temperature between 22-28° C.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Pristella Tetras are generally peaceful and can be kept with a wide range of similarly sized, non-aggressive fish species.

Feeding your Pristella Tetra
