Pair Blue Grass Guppy

When it comes to breeding aquarium fish one of the first species that aquarists attempt are guppies. Their flashy colours, easy care and clear distinguishable features between males and females make them a great starting point for entry breeders. After a few attempts of breeding standard guppies, breeders move onto other species of fish however there are hundreds of different colour strains and types of these stunning fish that can be bred, developed and experimented on. The LiveFish team have sourced these beautiful blue grass guppies which conveniently come in pairs for those who are looking to have an attempt at breeding this higher end strain.

These fish are incredibly stunning and really shine in their colours and flamboyant fins. Males have a reflective turquoise blue that runs from head to tail with streaks of lighter and darker blue hues through the body. This leads into the fins which are a bright blue overlaid with an array of black spots to contrast all of this. Females on the other hand are much larger with a greyer body with blue being isolated to the tail fin which also has black spots through it.

Not much effort will be needed to get these fish breeding, a 40 litre aquarium with an abundance of plants will usually provide the fry ample grounds to survive. Females give first to live, fully formed babies instead of laying eggs which also makes these fish a breeze to breed. Some effort does come in with maintaining the line and ensuring that the colours are present, with the desired fin shapes. This is normally done by selectively raising the best looking juveniles for breeding future generations.

Tank Recommendations for your Pair Blue Grass Guppy
Being a very small and easy to care for fish the pair of blue grass can be kept in a nano aquarium with the minimum being 40 litres. A sand or gravel substrate would be fine for these fish as well, a lot of plant growth will also make these fish contrast really well but also makes for handy locations where guppy fry can grow. Guppies however are in fact considered to be a 'hard water fish meaning they prefer the water to have an elevated PH and are not like a tetra. This higher PH of 7 - 8 can be achieved with a PH buffer or African cichlid lake conditioning salts.

Suitable Tank Buddies
The blue grass is a very peaceful aquarium fish and males are no different in aggression when compared with females. They are great with a wide range of nano aquarium fish however because of their bright and flashy fins, certain fin nipping species would be avoided. The other factor is that guppies are a fish that needs higher PH so keeping them with south American tetras may not be very suitable as these lower PH.

Usually Compatible
Pseudomogil species such as fork-tail rainbows, blue eyes, rice-fish and nano aquarium fish which can tolerate hard water conditions.

Sometimes Compatible
Medium growing or possibly fin nipping species. Bettas should also be avoided because of their similar flashy nature to guppies which could lead to aggression from the bettas end.

Rarely Compatible
Large and aggressive species which would prey on the guppies such as oscars, or jaguar cichlids.

Feeding your Pair Blue Grass Guppy
The blue grass guppy is very easy to feed once it is settled into the aquarium. It will readily eat a wide range of foods but would prefer to have high a floating nano pellet or flake due to their top dwelling behaviour. Giving them a nutritional food with a good protein level and varied ingredients can result in the colours to be slightly more enhanced.
