Pair Blue Eye Neon Red N.G

The Luminatus or Neon blue eye would arguably be the world's most popular Pseudomugil species in the world. These are a stunning dwarf rainbow from Papua New Guinea. The small size, flashy demeanour, and vibrant colour palette make it a great fish for aquarists looking for something new. They are also a great breeding project and the LiveFish team has been able to source male and female pairs of these awesome fish.

Neon blue eyes just as this name suggests are a beautiful vibrant fish that almost looks like it’s fake in photos. In males, the body colour is a deep chili orange colour whilst the face is olive green. The scales on both males and females have black tips which then transition into spots through the fins. The males especially have a neon blue stripe that runs on the nape of the fish that starts just after the dorsal fin. This is similar to the vibrant neon colour seen in cardinal tetras but arguably looks much better. Females on the other hand tend to be lighter with a honey-yellow body and the fins are also much more reserved. Both fish though have the characteristic blue eyes.

The small size of around 5 cm maximum makes the neon blue eye a great addition to nano aquariums. Whilst these fish are hardy once settled in, they can be fairly sensitive to water parameter swings which need to be taken into consideration. Breeding the neon blue eyes is also very easy once the fish mature, they spawn essentially every day into vegetation or dedicated spawning mops. The fry however is incredibly small and needs to be fed with infusoria or similar micro foods which can be difficult at times.

Tank Recommendations for your Neon Blue Eye Pair

Being a very small and relatively easy to care for fish a pair of neon blue eyes can be kept in nanosystems with the minimum being a 40-litre aquarium. due to the active mid-to-top water dwelling behaviour this species has, it is recommended to have a tight-fitting lid and longer aquarium.

The hardscape choices are not too important as long as they do not increase the PH of the water since these neon blue eyes prefer neutral water conditions with a preferred PH of around 6.5 - 7.5. They will also love a well-planted aquarium which will not only make these fish contrast really well but also promote more open behaviour.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Being a small and peaceful fish, the neon blue eye is a very easy fish to pair with other tank mates. They can be kept in aquariums with other dwarf rainbow fish or in mixed community aquariums.

Usually Compatible

Pseudomogil species such as forktail rainbows, delicate blue eyes, and nano aquarium fish like neon tetras.

Sometimes Compatible

Medium size growing rainbows such as blue rainbows, Murray River rainbows, and larger community fish like gouramis. Though these fish may be okay in temperament wise they would be far too boisterous for the small blue eye.

Rarely Compatible

Large and aggressive species would prey on the neon blue eye or fin-nipping species like tiger barbs.

Feeding your Neon Blue Eyes

The neon blue eyes are very easy to feed once it is settled into the aquarium. They will readily eat a wide range of foods but would prefer to have high protein-rich options like bloodworms, Mysis shrimp, or live foods such as brine shrimp. This however can be substituted with good-quality flakes or nano-floating pellets.
